May 30th COVID-19 Update

Michael Dembrow

May 30, 2021

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and looking out for your neighbors and friends in these difficult times.

Today’s COVID case numbers are relatively low, as we expect for a Sunday.  But as the recent surge in Oregon continues to retreat, that low becomes lower.  At 257, it’s the lowest it’s been for nearly two months.  It will inevitably go back up in a few days (holiday/weekend disruptions mean we likely won’t be back to “normal” reporting until Wednesday’s report).  Similarly, and less desirable, vaccinations and COVID tests are also significantly down this holiday weekend.

Speaking of which, I hope you and those close to you are able to enjoy this lovely Memorial Day weekend, finding time to appreciate those still with you, while finding time to remember those who are now gone.  It’s a weekend to remember those who sacrificed themselves for others and to ponder the nature and effects of that sacrifice.

Please stay safe and let me know if you have any questions about information in today’s  newsletter.

  • Want to see how close each county is to hitting the 65% target for moving to lower risk? Here's an interactive map showing percentages for total population and for eligible population (residents age 16+).  It shows how close each county is to hitting the 65% target.
  • Additional Brief Updates:
    • As I mentioned in last night’s newsletter, Oregon is getting closer to the goal of 70% of all adult Oregonians having received at least one dose. The New York Times reports thatthe same is true of the nation as a whole. The national goal is 70% by July 4.  Oregon’s is 70% by the end of June. (But we’re on track to get there a little sooner.)
