A THANK YOU TO A SPECIAL VETERAN

Uncle Tim and Cousin Enoch

Tim Sapp (Uncle), Rep. Boshart Davis, and Enoch Dixon (Cousin)

FLOOR COURTESY BY REPRESENTATIVES BOOMER WRIGHT AND SHELLY BOSHART DAVIS - MAY 5, 2021

Tim’s life has never been about what you got, but about what you got done. As a teenager he spent one summer working, while living in a shack in eastern Oregon, just so he could buy his dad a special Garcia bit for his horse. When he and Pat married, the second half of their honeymoon was spent helping family move back to Oregon.

As he served our country, his paychecks were sent home to pay tuition so two of his sisters could go to college.

Like many other patriotic young Americans, 18-year-old Tim Sapp shipped off to Vietnam in 1968 as an Army sergeant. Armed with a rifle, intestinal fortitude, survival instinct, and the grace of God, he returned home to Oregon… Minus his left leg and vision in his right eye… With his life forever changed.

In the years since then, Tim became the catalyst for the Florence Veterans Day parade it was the driving force for the creation of that museum to honor all veterans. The museum was completed with 100% volunteer labor and materials and generates visitors from all over the country.

In 2003, he was instrumental in bringing the Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall to Florence, for which he was awarded the Key to the City.

Tim’s military service was recognized with two Silver Stars, a Bronze Star with Valor, a Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Combat Infantryman‘s Badge, and a Purple Heart.

It is a great honor for the Oregon State Society Daughters of the American Revolution to recognize Tim Sapp with an Outstanding Veteran Volunteer Award.

And it was my distinct honor to read this on the Oregon House Floor. I shared this honor with Representative Boomer Wright from Florence, as Tim is his constituent and friend… But Tim is my uncle.

Thank you, Uncle Tim, for your service and your sacrifice.

EMERGENCY POWERS

We tried

On May 4, the House Republicans made a motion to vote on a bipartisan bill that would give the Legislature oversight on Governor Kate Brown's emergency powers and the COVID-19 response. Unfortunately, the motion narrowly failed: 27 for, 28 against.

HB 3177

On May 6, a motion to vote on HB 3177 failed. This bill limits restrictions Governor Kate Brown can impose on restaurants, gyms, and other indoor recreational facilities. Local businesses need all the help they can get.

OSHA: No-Show.

schools

I’ve heard more about OSHA rules from everyday Oregonians than any other subject (followed closely or similar to kids in school, lockdowns and the unemployment insurance debacle).

I can tell you that I have worked every angle I can. The most recent is joining other Business and Labor Committee members and Leader’s Drazan and Girod in this letter requesting an opportunity to review rules proposed.

An informational meeting was held in Business and Labor on May 5. The agenda states Legislative Counsel was scheduled to testifying. This is wrong...it should have been OSHA.

I voiced my thoughts during the Committee. Click here to watch the video and hear what I had to say in response.

SPEAKING UP FOR OREGON'S CHILDREN

Our children

REPRESENTATIVE VIKKI BREESE-IVERSON INTRODUCES HB 3399:

Last week, Representative Breese-Iverson, Representative Drazan, Senator Girod, and I announced on May 6 a bill (HB 3399) that would require schools to offer full, in-person learning for students in the upcoming school year. We know there’s already widespread agreement that the benefits of in-person learning outweigh the risks of spreading COVID-19 but passing this law will provide certainty for parents and kids. This is a bi-partisan effort supported in both chambers of the legislature. The bill would order the Oregon Department of Education to ensure that 100% of in-person instruction is offered in classrooms around the state.

"This past year and a half has been really hard on kids in Oregon, I have seen it first hand with my own boys. We have all the facts showing us it’s safe for them to be in school, so we can’t wait any longer. Hybrid learning has been a start, but fully reopening schools will give them the consistent and dependable schedule of in-person instruction that is so valuable for their learning. This bill promises a full reopening - no more doubt." - Representative Vikki Breese-Iverson

Simple, but necessary. We need certainty.

'TIS THE SEASON: Camping Safety

Campsite Safety

With summer right around the corner and more and more people camping we wanted to provide some tips to keep your valuables safe at your campsite:

  • Lock your vehicle. When venturing off on an early morning hike, lock your personal belongings out of sight in your vehicle or better yet, carry them with you. If you're tent camping, valuables can easily be stolen.
  • Get an extra set of eyes. If you leave your campsite for a day trip, ask your neighbors to keep an eye on it for you.
  • Lock items to a tree. If you have an expensive grill or bikes, secure them with a cable locked around a nearby tree.
  • Properly store your food. Thieves can also take the form of furry critters. Store your food in airtight containers. This not only keeps it fresh, it prevents animals from noticing its scent and raiding your campsite.
  • Keep an eye on Mother Nature. Mother Nature can quickly whip up a summer storm. Make sure your belongings are properly secured. Store expensive items in your car or RV. Properly stake items to help keep them secure from strong winds.
  • Dry your gear during the day. If you have expensive camping gear that needs to air out, do it during the day. Never assume you can leave it out overnight and expect it to be there in the morning.
  • Leave it at home. Camping provides an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. Leave the tablet or laptop at home and enjoy a simpler life.
