Women's History Month Highlight

Sharon Preston Image

In honor of Women's History Month, I would like to take a moment to highlight Sharon Preston. Sharon is the CEO of Ladies of Lead, LLC ®, which, since 2012, has offered firearm training and education about gun safety and personal protection—information that could save a life. Not only is Sharon a model of responsible gun ownership, her program has shown countless women the importance of their Second Amendment right!

Combating Racism and Intolerance

Over the last year, as fear over COVID-19 has spread, anti-Asian racism has grown too. This is unacceptable, and we must work together to stop racism, hatred and ignorance. I was pleased to see people peacefully protesting intolerance last weekend, and I'm working to ensure that Oregon is a welcoming place for all our citizens.

Honoring LCpl. Jack-Ryan Ostrovsky

Jack-Ryan Ostrovsky

A resident of Bend, Jack-Ryan Ostrovsky, a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, passed away last July when his landing craft sank during a training exercise off the southern California coast. Last week, the Oregon State Senate's Veterans and Emergency Preparedness Committee adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 15A, which acknowledged his life and service. As an Oregonian and an American, I am very grateful to Lance Corporal Ostrovsky for his service and sacrifice.

An Update on Senate Bill 554

This week, Senate Bill 554 will be brought to a vote. If passed, it would allow municipalities "to adopt ordinance or policy limiting or precluding affirmative defense for possessions of firearms in public buildings by concealed handgun licenses." There simply is not data to suggest that this legislation would prevent crime, nor that it would make the public safer. In fact, a study of the data would point to the opposite conclusion. I will say now what I have said before—I will never support legislation that would jeopardize the safety of my constituency and their ability to defend themselves and their families.

Senate Bill 554 jeopardizes your ability to defend yourself and your family, and I will be voting against it.

Best Regards,
