Friends and Neighbors,

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and looking out for your neighbors and friends in these difficult times.

In tonight’s newsletter, along with the (overall positive) COVID and vaccination updates, you’ll find the return of the reported COVID deaths listed by individual.  The current plan is for OHA to produce these each day.  Today’s is a long list, with several days’ worth of catching up to do.

Please stay safe, and let me know if you have any questions about information in today’s newsletter.

intro

TODAY’S CORONAVIRUS AND CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE UPDATE

  • New COVID Cases: OHA reports 619 new COVID cases over the last two days, an average of 482 per day. This count is a combination of positive test results and those who are presumed positive (see definition below).  The cumulative number of cases in Oregon since the beginning of the pandemic is 143,978.
  • Positive Test Results: OHA reports 699 positive tests today. (Individuals may have had multiple tests come back positive, and each is now counted separately.) The cumulative total of positive test results since the beginning of the pandemic is now 190,515.
  • Total Tests: OHA reported an additional 16,631 tests today. Our cumulative total of reported tests is now 3,218,747.
  • Positivity Rate: Today’s test positivity ratio for Oregon is 4.2%. The national ratio today is 8.4%.
  • Hospitalization Information:
    • Patients Currently with Confirmed COVID-19: 262 (9 fewer than yesterday)
    • Available ICU Beds: 155 (5 fewer than yesterday)
    • Other Available Beds: 589 (24 more than yesterday).
    • ICU Patients Confirmed w COVID-19: 61 (3 fewer than yesterday).
    • Confirmed COVID-19 Patients Currently on Ventilators: 32 (2 more than yesterday).
    • Available Ventilators: 777 (5 fewer than Friday).
  • Deaths: I’m sorry to report 23 COVID deaths for the last two days. You’ll find more information about those we’ve lost recently further down in the newsletter. The total number of COVID deaths in Oregon is now 1,981.
  • Vaccinations: As of the end of yesterday, here are the latest numbers:
    • New Immunizations Reported Today: 15,967
      • 10,712 administered yesterday
      • 5,255 administered previously and report received yesterday
    • Total First and Second Doses Administered So Far: 454,246.
    • Total Oregonians vaccinated so far: 35.
      • 87,748 now fully vaccinated with two doses
    • To date, 696,100 doses of vaccine have been delivered to sites across Oregon.
  • Today’s National Numbers:
    • Total Tests: 310,683,694 (up 1,375,084 from yesterday).
    • Total Cases: 26,052,734 (up 115,619 from yesterday).
    • Deaths: 437,237 (up 3,486 from yesterday).
    • These national numbers come from the COVID Tracking Project. You can visit that site HERE https://covidtracking.com/data/national
  • Additional Brief Updates:
    • The federal government will send one million vaccine doses to about 6,500 retail pharmacies on Feb. 11, the beginning of a federal program that will deliver vaccines directly to as many as 40,000 drugstores and grocery stores, Jeffrey D. Zients, the Biden White House’s Covid-19 response coordinator, announced today. You can read more about it here  and in the Oregonian article here.
  • The Biden administration announced that it will soon be sending the states a 20% increase in the number of anticipated doses.  You can read more about the boost in manufacturing here.
  • A federal judge ordered Oregon to begin vaccinating adults in custody in its correctional institutions immediately, ruling that they should be treated in the same way as others living in congregate setting. Given the extraordinary COVID dangers that we’ve seen for those living in prisons here in Oregon, as well as the fact that there total numbers (around 14,000) are roughly the amount we are vaccinating in one day, this decision makes a lot of sense to me.  You can read more about it in this Oregonian article. You’ll find the entire decision here.
  • One of the sad but unsurprising outcomes of our inadequate supply of vaccines is that some people with the means and/or the technical expertise to do so are “jumping the line.” Here’s a commentary arguing  why we should care.

OHA Provides Legislators with the Latest Info on Vaccinations

This evening legislators received a lengthy memo  with information about the coming rollout of the COVID vaccine to seniors 65 and older.  Everyone in this group will theoretically have access to the vaccine in the next few weeks, starting on February 8 for those 80 years old and older.  However, at the current rate of supply, it will still take around 12 weeks for everyone in this group (approx. 766,000 remain in need of a first dose).

OHA and ODE Collaborate on a Facebook Live

To give parents a better sense of what in-person school reopening might look like this spring, the Oregon Health Authority is hosting a Facebook Live event on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 1:30 p.m. Oregon Department of Education Director Colt Gill and OHA Deputy State Health Officer and Epidemiologist, Dr. Thomas Jeanne will answer school-related questions. Join in English or Spanish.
