January 22, 2021

Friends and Neighbors,

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and looking out for your neighbors and friends in these difficult times.

Today’s COVID news is positive on a number of fronts.  Our new COVID case count today is below 1,000 for the sixth day in a row.  Hospitalizations continue to decline as the lowest of all the states.  Oregon is the second lowest state for COVID infections among seniors, and the third lowest for COVID deaths among seniors.  As you’ll see from the graphs further down in the newsletter, our metrics have largely returned to the levels they were in early November, prior to the surge that triggered our current system of risk levels.  According to COVID Act Now our Re (transmission) number is now at .90, meaning that COVID spread is returning to levels we haven’t seen since before the surge.

Sadly, we’re still seeing high death counts, and they may continue to stay high for a while.  These deaths are for the most part the result of infections that began back in November.  Fortunately, we’ve been seeing hospitalization rates come down, which is good news for hospital capacity, and it’s good news because it will likely translate into lower death rates.

As you’ll see from tonight’s report, our vaccination rate is continuing to exceed the goal set by the Governor two weeks ago.  Just under 5% of Oregonians have received their first dose now.

The Governor is continuing to receive a great deal of criticism for her decision to immunize educators before seniors.  In her news conference today she and the OHA medical director, Racheal Banks, provided the clearest and most detailed explanation that I’ve heard of why she made this decision (which has the effect of pushing back access to the vaccine for seniors for two weeks).  I don’t have time tonight to go into detail, but I will tomorrow.  In the meantime, I encourage you to check out the news conference and the latest prioritization chart below.

Please stay safe, and let me know if you have any questions about information in today’s newsletter.
