Goodbye 2020-Hello 2021
Happy New Year

Hello Friends,

I hope this finds you as well as can be during these trying times. 2020 has pushed our collective selves, our communities and the businesses that support them to the brink and unfortunately, we're not in the clear yet.

Thousands are unemployed, and their support system has been riddled with failures. Businesses have been closed, without data to support such mandates, while big box stores are open to the masses. The public has been relatively shut out of the public process of governing this state, which cannot continue into the '21 Legislative Session. Legislators and the third branch of government have had little to no input on the mandates and closures. and the list goes on...

Rather than focusing on the bad, what could be construed as the political and hammer those who have and continue to make the decisions or the lack there of that have impacted so many negatively, I will make this short and leave the debates and subsequent battles to the weeks and months ahead in the '21 Oregon Legislative Session.

capitol sky fire

Fires raged across the state burning over one million acres

riot fires

Riots plagued Portland for more than 120 days and are still causing destruction

outside door

Denied entrance to their Capitol, violence erupted and public property was destroyed

Barker Helt and Brock Smith

Myself and retiring Legislators Jeff Barker and Cheri Helt saying goodbye at our third and final Special Session of 2020. It was a privilege to work with these fine legislators over the past few years.

caddy

Saying goodbye to my dear friend and colleague, Rep. Caddy McKeown. A champion on so many issues and my Co-Convener of our SOD Task Force. I will miss working with Caddy for the residents of the south coast and I thank her for her years public service.

floor speech

Speaking on the floor in support of rental/landlord relief and our impacted families as well as our small businesses that have been devastated by these closures during the third and final Special Session of 2020.

zoom

Lots of Zoom meetings. This was the farewell tribute to our retiring/outgoing colleagues.

state meat inspection

Proud to have passed my bill to move forward with a state meat inspection program in the first Special Session of 2020.

Antonia

My beautiful niece Antonia visits me at the Capitol. We were the only ones there.

nutcracker

I had the privilege to be involved with the Wild Rivers Conservatory of Dance and their filming of "A Brookings Nutcracker Story". I'm so proud of our youth and their dedication, the parents, community support, cast, crew and Sky-Marie for their incredible work on this film.

Hospital Check Presentation

We were successful in securing the $2 million dollars in funding for Curry Health Network's Brookings Emergency Department in a Special Session of 2020. I am also very proud of the Southwest Oregon Children's Foundation in supplying CHN with a $24 thousand dollar grant that will support a nurse internship program at Curry General Hospital

We will continue work towards opening our small businesses while protecting the public. No one works harder to do so than our small business owners and their staff. We will continue to fight special interest and get the liability protection needed for our small businesses and health care providers.

I wish only the best for you, your family, your community and the businesses that support them in the coming year. It is an honor and privilege to work for you as your State Representative and I am grateful for the opportunity to do so. Stay safe, God Bless you, your family and your neighbor and have a Happy New Year.

Yours truly,

Representative David Brock Smith

Together, we will build a better Oregon
