Coronavirus Update: New Requirements on Masks and Gatherings

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I’m breaking the three-days-a week summer newsletter schedule to add a short newsletter today because of the announcements from Governor Brown this morning.

Today, Governor Brown is setting additional public health requirements that will go into effect this Friday, July 24. They deal with expanded use of face coverings and more limitations on gatherings in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Here is a breakdown of the new public health guidelines:

Face Coverings

  • Face coverings will be required for all Oregonians ages 5 and up in indoor public spaces and outdoors when 6 feet of distance cannot be maintained (it’s currently age 12 and up). Face coverings for children between ages 2 and 5 are still recommended but not required. This change includes schools when they reopen, which has been made clear in updated guidance released today by the Oregon Department of Education, which can be found here.
  • Face coverings will now be required even in cases of physical exertion indoors (such as in gyms) and outdoors (e.g., running) when you can’t physically distance.

Businesses

  • The maximum indoor capacity limit will be 100 people for all venues in Phase 2 counties, and for restaurants and bars in Phase 1 or 2 counties. Outdoor venue capacity remains at capped at 250 people.
  • Restaurants and bars will be required to stop serving customers at 10 pm statewide, regardless of the phase a county is in.
