April 5th COVID-19 Update

Michael Dembrow

April 5, 2020

Dear Neighbors and Friends:

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and looking out for your neighbors and friends.

Not too much to report today other than the numbers.  I’ve taken advantage of the slow day to add one feature at the end: some bar graphs showing Oregon’s numbers of positive cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, broken down by age.  You’ll see that whereas the numbers for positives and hospitalizations are rather evenly distributed, the number of deaths so far is not: it definitely skews to the older population.

I’ll have a couple of important briefings to report on tomorrow.

TODAY’S CORONAVIRUS AND CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE UPDATE

a

  • Positive Cases: OHA has reported that 69 additional Oregonians tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, putting the total at 1,068.
  • Total Tests: Today’s reported testing numbers reflect an increase of 1,699 test results from yesterday, bringing the total test results so far to 20,624.
  • Ratio:  Though the overall numbers are increasing, our ratio of positive results remains around 5%.  That’s much lower than the national average (currently nearly 19%).
  • Deaths: I’m sorry to report that another Oregonian died from the disease yesterday, bringing the total number of deaths in Oregon to 27.
  • Hospitalized: The number of Oregonians who have been hospitalized with symptoms is now at 258, an increase of 19 from yesterday.
  • Other Hospital Information: Unfortunately, the glitch in the hospital bed reporting system hasn’t been resolved yet, and the OHA still doesn’t have confidence in the numbers that they received. So I’ll have to leave these fields blank again today.  We’re promised corrected numbers soon, hopefully Monday.

If You Need Unemployment Help:  DON’T CALL

I want to remind you that if you’re having problems filing for unemployment, or have questions about your eligibility, PLEASE don’t try to call the department.  We’ve had constituents writing in and telling us of having to endure endless busy signals and hours of waiting when they’ve tried to connect by phone.  The phone system is clearly still overwhelmed.  People have had much better experiences when they’ve used the special email address:  OED_COVID19_info@oregon.gov.  I really recommend it, at least for now.

AND FINALLY,

Here again are some resources that you will find useful:

If the above links are not providing you with answers to your questions or directing you to the help that you need, please consider me and my office to be a resource.  We’ll do our best to assist you or steer you in the right direction.

Best,
