House District 30 News - August '19

Rep. Sollman

Friends and Neighbors,

The 2019 session ended on Sunday night (6/30) and I was back to work at my other job the next day. My job as your state representative does not end though when the gavel falls on sine die. The interim brings me closer to home and the work shifts to making district contacts locally. I will have more opportunities for tours, constituent meetings, and visits to House District 30 businesses. Now that I am not making the daily trip back and forth to Salem, it has provided extra time for me to spend with family and friends and have some fun.

Bill Update

JAlter

What an honor it was to work alongside 14 year old Claire Sarnowski, Senator Rob Wagner and the wonderful advocates to bring SB 664 across the finish line strong this past session. My dear constituent, Alter Wiener would be so proud of this accomplishment. While it was heartbreaking that he could not be here to see his dream become a reality, it was amazing to be able to experience that his family was able to see, hear and understand that Alter was a true champion of this work, a champion to make positive change. They know that his determination to make a difference for future generations came to be because of who he was and what he experienced in his life.

“I have seen that man’s capacity for evil has no limit, just as man’s genius is not limited to reaching new heights in every human endeavor.” ~ Alter Wiener

Leaders in House District 30

Beach Pace is an amazing local leader in House District 30! She is a Hillsboro City Councilor and is the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest. She recently began a new program to serve LGBTQAI + residents closer to home. Here is some more information on the WQRC, in her words.

The Westside Queer Resource Center (WQRC) is a group of people working to set up an LGBTQAI + resource center on the Westside of the Portland Metro area in the near future (1-2 years). There is a WQRC Core Group of folks who have been working together since January 2019 hosting community events such as listening sessions and picnics to help create a space and a place for LGBTQAI+ members and allies on the Westside.

We are doing this work because, in order to get LGBTQAI+ support now, a person needs to trek into Portland. This can be cost prohibitive, too far and/or take too long for some people to get to and from. The cost, distance and time is exacerbated when a person seeking help has been: experiencing bullying, been kicked out of their home, is a confused parent seeking answers to support their LGBTQAI+ child etc.

We also, as a group, realized that the LGBTQAI+ community was disparate and unconnected on the Westside. Our work is also about building a strong LGBTQAI+ community locally for all community members (LGBTQAI+ and allies).

We are in the beginning stages of this work and welcome anyone who wants to help. We plan on hosting 2 more listening sessions this Fall 2019. More information can be obtained via Facebook: @westsideQRC or feel free to contact us via email at westsideqrc@gmail.com.

Plastic Free Eco-challenge – July 1-31

July was a month-long effort for all of us to shift away from our single-use plastic dependency and join the Plastic Free Eco-challenge. Every day in July my goal was to create an awareness campaign to show how the smallest of changes can collectively lead to positive change. I hope that you were able to follow along on social media, and find helpful information and encouragement to continue your effort to reduce the use of plastic in your life. I urge you to follow organizations like Metro and Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling for more information.
