Hello Friends

Dear District 7,

If there is a bill you are hearing about, either in the news or elsewhere, finding it is easy. The Legislature has a great tool available to you at https://www.oregonlegislative.gov. From this page, you can access bill information by clicking on the Oregon Legislative Information System OLIS icon in the menu bar.

Once inside OLIS, you will see a summary of the day’s events, including hearings, floor sessions and other Capitol events. You also will see a menu at the top right with an icon for “Bills,” which is a great place to start.

You can search for bills by bill number. If you do not know the bill number, you can search by keyword text or by the bill’s sponsor. Both House and Senate bills can be searched by hovering over the results. Then you can read the bill summary to help narrow it down to what you are looking for.

Last week I testified on one of my priority bills for this session. Senate Bill 507 relates to occupational diseases for purposes of workers compensation for certain workers. When these workers suffer death, disability or impairment when they help us, we need to ensure we are taking care of them and their families. This ensures that the right professionals get the rights and help they deserve when they and their families suffer these unfortunate events.

I also testified on Senate Bill 924, relating to the deinstitutionalization of children taken into protective custody. This bill removes the ability for a ward or a runaway to be placed in a juvenile detention center. This bill is important because, if passed, before a child can be placed in a detention center, due process will be required. In Oregon, there have been cases where runaways and wards have been placed in detention centers and treated as criminals. Runaways and wards should be treated with compassion; not as criminals.

As always, I am honored to serve each and every one of you in Salem. Thank you for entrusting me to fight to improve your lives.
