Senator Chuck Riley

March 2019

Senator Chuck Riley with his wife Katie Riley

Hello. Thank you for caring about the wellbeing of our state and taking the time to stay informed with my newsletter. For the 2019 Legislative session, I serve as Chair of the Senate Committee on Business and General Government and am continuing as Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Information Management and Technology. Additionally, I sit on the Senate Finance and Revenue Committee and the Joint Committee on Tax Expenditures and I am serving a three-year term on the Governor's Commission on Senior Services, and I sit on the oversight committee for the Department of Motor Vehicle Transformation Project.

I have a busy schedule, but I always have time to meet with my constituents. If you’re planning to be in Salem, contact my office so my staff can make sure to reserve time on my calendar so I can meet with you while you’re here.

My Salem office phone number is 503-986-1715 and my legislative email is: Sen.ChuckRiley@oregonlegislature.gov

One of my highest priorities for this legislative session is my bill SB 543 which establishes Children’s Service Districts. Currently, there is a lack of program availability along with inadequate funding to support outside of school time for children under the age of 18.

SB 543 would allow communities to vote to form a new type of service district to fund programs for kids outside of school time. “Children’s Services” are broadly defined so that a community can customize the services being offered to best meet their children’s unique needs outside of school hours. These programs would include a wide range of options based on local or regional wants and needs.

Children’s Service Districts would pick up where the Commission on Children and Families left off by providing services for Oregon’s kids outside of school time. These Service Districts would be similar to the Portland Children’s levy which has passed three times as well as other similar programs that have passed in Seattle, San Francisco, Missouri, and Florida.

For me it continues to be important as well as a priority to work on issues facing children and families in our community and around our state.
