Happy New Year

Friends & Neighbors,

I am thrilled to have this opportunity to once again serve my community in this capacity. These newsletters are opportunities to give updates and recaps of the work I am doing as your legislator. I do not do this work alone. Next month you will learn more about the team that I have the pleasure of working with in Salem and in district. Together, we are working for positive change here in Oregon. I hope that you will continue to join me as well and, as promised, we have prepared a step-by-step guide to the Oregon Legislative Information System (OLIS) that will help you keep pace with the challenging, and sometimes fast-paced, work ahead.

OLIS

  • Step 1: Go to https://olis.leg.state.or.us
  • Step 2: In the top right corner, select “Session”
    • You’ll want to select the corresponding session with the policy you are looking for.
    • If you are hoping to see bills from the 2017 session, you’ll want to select “2017 regular session”
    • If you are hoping to see what is happening on that day you’ll want to select “Today”
  • Step 3: Use the front page to navigate committees, floor sessions, and bill readings
  • Step 4: In the top right corner, select “Bills”
    • From this tab you will be able to navigate bills by number, sponsor, or text.
  • Step 5: Once you’ve found the correct bill, select it and it will take you to the bills specific webpage.
  • Step 6: Once you are on the specific page for a bill, you will be able to “E-Subscribe” in the top right corner.
  • Step 7: You are able to “E-Subscribe” to sponsors, bills, committees, topics, etc.
    • E-Subscribe is a very useful tool to stay up-to-date on what is happening.
    • I would be careful with how broad you set the topics, “Education” could yield you hundreds of emails a day.
  • Step 8: You can watch committee hearings and floor sessions in real time if you click on the corresponding meeting. You are also able to watch prior hearings in past sessions if you follow the steps above and then navigate to the correct video.

Legislative Days

PCC

In mid-December, the legislature met for a few days to help prepare for the 2019 session. It was a very busy couple of days filled with meetings, committee hearings, and meaningful discussions with my colleagues. I am looking forward to the work we are going to do this session.

Grinch

Grinch Readings

Before Winter Break in the Hillsboro School District, I was fortunate enough to continue a tradition that I hold dearly. Since my time on the Hillsboro School Board, I have enjoyed the opportunity to read “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” to elementary schools in Hillsboro. I was able to read at eleven schools this year, and each one was a different and exciting experience. I thank all of the teachers for allowing me to come into your classroom and read to your students. A BIG thank you to the students for being so engaged and asking great questions about what I do in Salem, or just having a conversation about one of my favorite stories that I love to share.

Bill Update

YAC

I am really looking forward this session to advocating to significantly reduce the use of single-use plastic bags in Oregon. I am excited to be working Rep. Carla Piluso on this policy that works to eliminate single-use plastic shopping bags at retail and restaurant establishments. It would require a 10-cent fee on paper bags (at grocery stores), to incentivize the use of reusable bags for customers. We’ve seen cities across the state create city ordinances for sustainable bag initiatives, including Hillsboro. As more cities take this on, it has now created an rich opportunity to address this issue at the state level with legislation in order to ease communication and business practices across the state.  The Youth Advisory Council in Hillsboro moved this policy forward for our community with research, community surveys and presentations and I am hopeful they can come on board to help with this state level policy too. We have broad support and I am looking forward to moving this piece of legislation across the finish line strong.

Listen & Learn

Listen & Learn

On January 16th from 6-7:30pm at Tobias Elementary, I am hosting an event and will be joined by other elected officials from the Hillsboro School Board, City of Hillsboro, Washington County, and Metro for an evening to “Listen & Learn”. This will be an opportunity for you to ask questions to various levels of government and meet with your elected officials. The format will be “lightning rounds” with the audience being in small groups that rotate between the different levels of government. This event should be a lot of fun and an opportunity for all to listen & learn about the issues we face together. I hope to see you there.
