Kicking off the New Year

Janeen Sollman

Friends & Neighbors,

I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season and that 2018 is setting up to be a successful year for you and your family. I was very blessed to spend time with my family over the holidays with good food, fun game nights and lots of laughter. Over the past year, I was met with so many new experiences both professionally and personally.  With these new experiences came a whirlwind of emotions, incredible learning opportunities and monumental successes.

In Salem, together we passed the strongest pay equity law in the country, the nation’s first predictive scheduling law and set in motion exciting ethnic studies standards. We also made significant investments in our transportation system, and saw a 14.7% increase in funding for veteran affairs. I am extremely proud of the work that was done on the Reproductive Health Equity Act. This will ensure that all Oregonians—regardless of their gender identity, immigration status, or income level—have access to the full range of reproductive health services, and that women, along with their doctor, can make health care decisions. HB 2391 brought together Democrats, Republicans and healthcare providers and organizations, to find a bipartisan solution to fund Medicaid and protects healthcare coverage for over 350,000 Oregonians. When Oregon's leaders work together for solutions to our issues, we can all benefit from stronger legislation.

PAX
I had a great morning at Reedville Elementary School in early December. These students love the PAX Good Behavior Game and the teachers love that it is giving their students the tools they need to grow and thrive! Thank you to the Hillsboro School District and Washington County for your investment in student success!

My main priority in this position is to provide you with the best representation I can bring to our district, and, in order for me to do that I closely follow my motto of "Listen, Learn, Act".  Listening sessions provide a way for neighbors to come together and talk about the issues, share their perspective and hear how those conversations lead us to the work I do for our district in Salem. I am proud that I have held 17 listening sessions over the past year and thank you all for attending and being part of those conversations. We've had multiple meetings in coffee shops, the Brookwood Library, the senior center and have visited retirement communities.  The next listening session is January 13 at Ava Roasteria in Orenco!

OBRC
This month, I was able to take a tour of the ORPET facility in St.Helens, OR. This state-of-the-art facility partners with the Oregon BottleDrop to recycle EVERY plastic bottle that is redeemed in our state. Every bottle that gets returned from Burns to Portland arrives at this facility and turned into a plastic pellet product that gets sold around the world to generate into new plastic products! I am so proud that Oregon is an example to the country on sustainable recycling. I am excited to look for ways to expand this process into our other recycling processes to promote clean, responsible recycling of the products we use.

Winter Driving Tips

As winter gets into full swing, it is very important that we stay safe on the roads! The number one thing for us to do is be prepared! Have chains handy, numbers of who you should call, and what to do in case of emergency. You can visit ODOT’s TripCheck to stay up-to-date on road conditions across the state, or visit Washington County’s Winter Driving webpage to get tips and resources to use while on the road.

Washington County residents: this is who you call to report a hazard!

  • To request emergency response for a life-threatening situation – call 9-1-1
  • To report a non-emergency road hazard after-hours - call 503-629-0111
  • During business hours:
  • For a state highway – call ODOT at 503-283-5859
  • For a county road – call Washington County at 503-846-ROAD (846-7623)
  • For a city street – contact your city directly

What to keep in your car for winter?

  • Flashlight w/extra batteries
  • Water
  • Snack foods including energy bars
  • Windshield Scraper
  • Emergency flares
  • Jumper Cables
  • Cell phone adapter to plug into lighter

Finnish
I had a wonderful evening at the Finlandia Foundation Columbia-Pacific Chapter (FFCPC)'s Finland 100 Gala Celebration. Rep Debbie Boone and I worked on a Proclamation together to honor the 100th year of independence and I was privileged to read it that night, especially because I am proudly of Finnish descent

Banks CTE

I really enjoyed my visit to Banks High School talking with their economics class and touring their CTE (Career Technical Education) Programs. The high school and school district are doing great things to provide real-world opportunities to their students and are working to successfully build their CTE program.

This goes beyond wood shop classes! They offer creative design, marketing, basic construction skills, welding, and 3-D printing, all while working collaboratively to build a business that can design, manufacture, and market their product. With a 94% graduation rate and a brand-new computer lab, thanks to Measure 98 funds, Banks High School is proof that a rural school can thrive if they are given the resources and support to provide the opportunity to students.

LS/SBS

We had a great turnout at my listening session in December. We had solid discussion on healthcare, education and land use. Thanks to all who joined. I appreciate hearing all sides of the issues!

After our meeting, we organized support for our Orenco Station Small Businesses. Our  #SmallBusinessSaturday group went to Flowers by Zsuzsana, iSpark Toys, Fancy That and Nature's Pet Market Orenco Station. The businesses truly appreciated the support! Let's keep it up and support the small businesses within our communities.
