It's been a busy summer!

Janeen A. Sollman

Friends & Neighbors,

The summer has been very busy and I have enjoyed my time staying close to home and working in the district. I have had the opportunity to volunteer, talk with local leaders and business owners, visit with constituents and explore youth programs in Hillsboro. A big highlight of the summer for us personally was our son’s wedding in August. It was an absolutely beautiful outdoor ceremony and a day of celebration for our family.  There were happy tears, much laughter and lots of dancing!

Here are some of the highlights from my work in the district:

Camp EAGLE was one of my favorite activities this summer it is a program run by the City of Hillsboro to provide a summer camp experience to kids experiencing housing instability and homelessness. When we visited, we did an eye-opening, problem-solving exercise with the kids to show them that their voice matters. The Hillsboro Tribune did a great article that you can check out here!

City of Hillsboro supports a summer program called, The Outpost. It brings kids together around the community for a free lunch and educational activities. I joined the outpost on “Water Wednesday” and was able to join a group of kids for a day of water play and FUN! They also did a read aloud (in English and Spanish), while eating lunch that was provided by the Hillsboro School District. It was a great experience and so heartwarming to see the effort that Hillsboro and so many partners put forth for kids.

The safety and well-being of our neighbors is a priority. I have met with our law enforcement leaders this summer to talk about challenges we face and the work they are doing to work with our community members. It was an honor to ride along with Deputy Schroeder from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, to see how well our community is served  through a wide variety of calls and situations. I look forward to more rides in the future.

Senior Center

McKinney

The Young Scholars at McKinney Elementary is a summer school STEM program that averages about 35 students every day, for a month, to focus on math, reading, and STEM activities. The focus on innovation and creativity was great to see, they would get an hour each day to create. Whether it was a building made out of Legos, or a fully functioning rubber band car, these kids were encouraged to use their imagination and work with their peers to create. The day I visited, we went out to the community garden and observed our surroundings through a magnifying lens to see insects that keep our plants healthy and thriving. Programs like this are needed to address the “summer slide” issue that our students can face when they return to school in the Fall after so much time away from the classroom. Programs like this keep learning alive and thriving for our students.

Other work that I've been involved with:

  • Attended the Rally for the Hummingbirds that was a call to the legislature to focus on clean air, protect our environment and do more for the clean fuels program.
  • Attended the “From Housing Crisis to Housing Action" – Friday Forum of the Portland City Club.
  • Toured Larry Duyck’s family farm and rode in a combine at Dave Vanashe’s farm.
  • Met with Banks Mayor Pete Edison and City Manager Jolynn Becker to discuss city priorities and future water system upgrades to make improvements in their infrastructure to prepare for future growth.
  • Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce forum to discuss legislative action: passage of the transportation package was a key priority for the Chamber and one that I supported.
  • Clean Water Services behind-the-scenes tour of their Tigard facility.
  • Attended the Perfect Pairings Fundraiser for Big Brother Big Sisters at Sokol Blosser Winery.
  • Met with both Congresswoman Bonamici’s office and Hillsboro’s Mayor, Steve Callaway to discuss potential ways to support solar energy operations in Hillsboro and important investments in renewable energy. Great for the environment, jobs and our economy.

Frederick & Sollman

  • My office has been talking to small businesses in the district to discuss hurdles and how legislation helps their business prosper.
  • Returned to my route as a Meals and Wheels regular volunteer driver in Hillsboro and joined their advisory council to help better serve our homebound seniors.
  • Volunteered at the Beaverton Fred Meyer on 8/30 with the Store-to-Door organization. We shopped for 28 homebound seniors and people with disabilities.
  • Cheered on our hometown Hops! Playoffs start this week!

YAC

As you can see, this has been a very eventful interim for me. If you have any events or programs that you think would be beneficial for me to be a part of, please reach out. This past year has been an incredible learning experience for me and I appreciate all the support I’ve had pouring in from the community. I truly think that House District 30 is the best district in the state and we need to do what we can to support other communities across the state to promote inclusion, acceptance, and opportunity for all.
