Central Oregon Community College

COCC

It was great to get a visit in Salem from COCC's VP of Administration Matt McCoy and Vikki Ricks the Chair of the College Board of Directors. COCC plays a pivotal role in educating and training Central Oregonians.

Transportation Donation Fund

Transporation

I had the opportunity last Monday to testify on behalf of Senate Bill 798 which would create the Transportation Donation Fund. The Transportation Donation Fund would allow individuals, organizations, and communities to donate money or other resources in order to assist the Oregon Department of Transportation in improving road safety or carry out other transportation projects. Donors could specify what projects they want their donation to support or they could let ODOT decide the best use of their donation. The legislation was approved by the Senate Committee on Business and Transportation and sent to the Ways and Means Committee.

Property Tax Protections for Seniors

Last week, my Legislative Director Bill Newell testified in support of Senate Bill 700 which would protect taxpayers over the age of 65 and who are living on a fixed income from increases in their property taxes. Most of the folks eligible for the tax limitation have been lifelong taxpayers who have contributed greatly to the state and their communities. The legislation would only prevent increases in their property tax rather than eliminating them entirely.

Education Innovation Fund

Improving Oregon’s education system is one of my main goals as a legislator. A critical part of that is ensuring local decision makers have the flexibility and resources they need to meet the many goals and required of them. I testified last week for a bill that would do just that. Senate Bill 803 would create the Education Innovation Fund to provide grants to school districts to meet goals and requirements such as minority and special education student success, physical education requirements, improving graduation rates (Measure 98).
