Elected Leaders Visit Hillsboro's Year-Round Shelter
With construction of Hillsboro's future year-round shelter advancing rapidly, U.S. Representative Suzanne Bonamici joined Hillsboro Mayor Beach Pace and Washington County Commissioner Jerry Willey for a tour of the facility last week. State Senator Janeen Sollman and State Representative Pam Marsh were also in attendance.
During the tour, Mayor Pace and City of Hillsboro & Washington County staff highlighted the collaboration and advocacy that support the project and described the site's future amenities, including accommodations for 75 adults with pets allowed, hot meals, housing navigation services, and more.
“Our year-round shelter project showcases how government agencies and nonprofit partners can work together to meet the needs of people living unsheltered and preserve community livability for everyone,” said Mayor Pace.
“We are extremely grateful for the funding and support that make this project possible. This includes $850,000 in Community Project Funding secured with the help of Congresswoman Bonamici, more than $2 million in state funding, and resources from Metro's Supportive Housing Services allocated through Washington County to support construction and ongoing operations"
"The City is proud to help ensure people experiencing houselessness will have access to life-saving shelter and long-term housing support in Hillsboro for years to come,” Mayor Pace added.
The visit was covered by Oregon Public Broadcasting and KATU.

Year-Round Shelter Operator Selected
Hillsboro’s future year-round shelter will be operated by Project Homeless Connect Washington County, whose staff bring more than 17 years of experience serving people experiencing homelessness in our community.
Based on the organization’s experience, commitment to equity, detailed staffing plan, and housing-focused approach, the City of Hillsboro and Washington County selected Project Homeless Connect after a competitive Request for Proposals.
Watch the Year-Round Shelter Community Meeting Recording
The City of Hillsboro, Washington County, and Project Homeless Connect Washington County (PHC) invited community members to learn more about the project, get to know the shelter operator, PHC, and ask questions during a virtual meeting on August 7.
A recording of the meeting is available on Engage Hillsboro.
Spanish interpretation was provided. See the Spanish recording & PowerPoint presentation on Conéctate Hillsboro.
Creating a Neighborhood Plan for the Year-Round Shelter
Neighborhood Plans are an agreement made by the shelter operator and Washington County to ensure each shelter location is a supportive neighbor.
The City is supporting Washington County and PHC to engage nearby residents and businesses to develop a Neighborhood Plan to help guide communication and collaborative problem-solving for PHC and close neighbors. The August 7 virtual Community Meeting served as a first step in this process.
During September & October, PHC is inviting the shelter's closest neighbors to get to know the organization and engage directly in workshops to shape the Neighborhood Plan.
The completed Plan will be shared on Engage Hillsboro later this fall.
