What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps works by partnering with thousands of schools, state agencies, nonprofits, and other organizations to increase their capacities to solve local community problems. How exactly do these organizations accomplish their missions? Through the power of AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps members are people 17 and above who participate in national service by serving their communities through AmeriCorps. In return, AmeriCorps members receive the following benefits:

• An education award of up to $7,395 (nontaxed if used in Oregon)
• Modest living stipend while they serve, differs by program
• Health & Childcare benefits
• Professional training and networking opportunities
• Access to a 1.2 million AmeriCorps Alumni Network
• Access to Employers of National Service
• Access to Schools of National Service

Is there more than ‘one type’ of AmeriCorps?

Yes, and most certainly there’s a type for you! There are five main ‘branches’ of AmeriCorps (select the individual links to learn more about each type):

• State & National AmeriCorps
• National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) & FEMA Corps
• Public Health AmeriCorps
• Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA)
• AmeriCorps Seniors (for those 55 and older)

Each branch offers specific benefits, focuses, and professional experiences. We, at OregonServes, have a portfolio of eight amazing AmeriCorps Oregon State programs, their focuses ranging from education, economic development to land conservation.

The AmeriCorps Recruitment Unit (ARU) recently hosted a webinar called, “Joining AmeriCorps: Myths, Misconceptions, and How to Start” which discusses the myths and misconceptions about projects, benefits, and the AmeriCorps opportunities available to you.
