A look back at our first study
Updates since we published in March 2023
We are pleased to share exciting updates following the release of our first study in March 2023 on the “Postsecondary Healthcare Education Shortage in Oregon”. This study focused on the supply and demand of nurses, uncovering critical insights that shed light on the challenges faced by our state’s healthcare education system. The summary and the full study can be found on the OLDC’s website.
We are incredibly proud to announce that our study, “Postsecondary Healthcare Education Shortage in Oregon”, has received the 2023 National Notable Document Award for Public Health from the National Conference of State Legislatures. We extend our gratitude to the Oregon State Library for recognizing and nominating our study. This award highlights the significance of our research and its potential for positive impact on education policies in Oregon.
In April, Rogue Community College received approval from the Oregon State Board of Nursing to significantly expand their nursing training program. The expansion, nearly doubling the program’s size, was motivated by the data from our study serving as compelling evidence that growing their nursing program to meet unmet demand for nursing education would positively impact the labor force, and help meet student demand within their region.
Central Oregon Community College is actively developing curriculum for a Bachelor of Nursing program, with the goal of allowing enrollment in two years. The passage of SB523 (2023) has now made it possible for community colleges in Oregon to offer Bachelor of Nursing programs, providing more educational opportunities for aspiring nurses.
OLDC remains committed to facilitating positive change in Oregon’s healthcare education sector. We are actively engaged with Future Ready Oregon’s newly established Healthcare Consortium, offering guidance on the implementation of our study’s recommendations. This ongoing collaboration ensures that our research translates to meaningful action that benefits Oregonians.
Looking ahead, OLDC is actively working on several research and reporting projects related to teachers. Our initiatives include evaluating the supply and demand of teachers and publishing a dashboard that provides insights into teachers prepared in Oregon who serve within the Oregon public school system. We remain dedicated to fostering a thriving education environment in our state.
We appreciate your continued support and interest in OLDC’s mission to provide actionable data that helps individuals and communities in Oregon thrive. Stay tuned for more updates and valuable insights from our ongoing research endeavors.
