Oregon issues first suspension of tobacco retail license for repeated violations
PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon Department of Revenue (DOR), in partnership with Oregon Health Authority (OHA), is issuing the state’s first suspension of a tobacco retail license due to repeated violations of tobacco retail sales laws.
The license will be suspended for a retailer located in Sheridan, Yamhill County, as of Sept. 12. This is due to three violations, including twice selling tobacco products to someone under the age of 21. As a result, the retailer may not sell tobacco products for 14 days.
A list of all licensed tobacco retailers, including those with suspended licenses and associated timelines, can be found at https://www.oregon.gov/dor/programs/businesses/pages/statewide-tobacco-retail-license.aspx
Retailers face suspension when they receive three or more civil penalties for violating tobacco retail sales laws. OHA’s Tobacco Retail License (TRL) program works with DOR to monitor tobacco retailers and ensure they follow the law in their selling of commercial tobacco products, including vaping products and e-cigarettes.
“Oregon takes violations to tobacco sales laws seriously,” said OHA’s TRL Program Manager Sarah Wylie. “Too many violations can result in losing the ability to continue to sell commercial tobacco products.”
TRL’s Retailer Training Manual has more information on the program’s escalating penalty structure.
DOR and OHA conduct regular site inspections to help retailers follow the law, and provide updates as needed when changes to state, federal and local laws occur.
DOR also provides:
- Answers to frequently asked questions about tobacco retail licensing.
- Access to state program staff for answers to questions about the law or support to ensure compliance.
OHA also provides:
- Training on how to comply with tobacco retail laws in Oregon.
- Fact sheets and answers to frequently asked questions about tobacco retail licensing (available in seven languages).
- Connection to state and local public health staff to answer questions and provide on-site education and training for retailers.
- Interpretation services.
