Resources for Private Schools

New Resources for Tobacco Free Schools

The Oregon Health Authority has released a new resource to strengthen Oregon’s commitment to student wellness and belonging: the Tobacco- and Nicotine-Free Schools Model Policy template (you will need to login or create an account with Smokefree Oregon Portal).

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) collaborated with local health departments in six different counties, ranging from rural, frontier and urban regions, to draft an equitable and evidence-based model policy that:

  • Covers all tobacco and nicotine products: applies to all forms of tobacco and nicotine – regardless of whether its tobacco-derived or synthetic nicotine products.
  • Promotes non-punitive approaches: avoids practices such as out of school suspension or expulsion and instead provides guidance for supportive and educational interventions for staff, students and their families.
  • Encourages quitting support: includes youth-centered and evidence-based quitting resources.
  • Safe handling and disposal: provides contact information and resources for collecting, storing and disposing of confiscated tobacco and nicotine products, protecting the health and minimizing harms for both staff and students.

School-based tobacco and nicotine policies are important for preventing youth tobacco use and exposure. This model policy fosters student belonging and creates an environment where students and staff can feel supported.

New Resource: ODE’s Version 3.0 Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in K-12 Classroom Guidance

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is proud to announce the release of Version 3.0 of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in K-12 Classrooms Guidance in a new online format! The updated guidance takes a thoughtful, cautious, and human-centered approach. It emphasizes strong guardrails, student thinking, and encourages districts to evaluate if, when, and how to use Generative AI in classrooms before adopting it.

ODE is offering the following virtual Office Hours sessions to support use of the new guidance and to answer questions on how to keep humans in the driver seat with Generative AI:

 Monday, June 29: 9 am-10 am

Thursday, August 20: 1 pm-2 pm

Thursday, September 3: 9 am-10 am

New Resource: ODE’s Mental Health and Wellness Strategies to Support Students Impacted by Immigration Activity

Due to increased immigration enforcement over the past 18 months, students and families may have experienced social, emotional, and physical symptoms of stress, anxiety, and hypervigilance. These experiences may be ongoing. As a response, the Oregon Department of Education has developed a resource that contains mental health strategies for supporting students impacted by immigration activity.

This new resource is available in nine different languages, including Spanish and English. It contains many embedded care resources that focus on the Latino/a/x communities. However, please note that these strategies are universal and may help you support various communities within your school.

We encourage you to share this resource with teachers, parents, and other relevant members of your school community.

New Resource: High-Quality Science Instruction

Dig Into Science is a free, self-paced professional learning series co-developed by partners in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and New Mexico. These modules provide an introduction to current best practices in science education. They are designed as entry points for teachers new to science, paraprofessionals who support science learning, administrators who observe and support educators, or anyone seeking to improve high-quality science teaching practices.

New Resources: Math Instruction

  • Data Science 4 Everyone Toolkit: Looking for the right data science tool for your classroom? Use the toolkit to find resources that match your needs. You can filter by grade level, time commitment, and coding experience to identify tools that fit your students and your instructional goals.
  • Learner Variability Navigator: This free tool helps you find research-based strategies that support the whole learner so you can create better learning experiences today. The Navigator can help you identify educational strategies that align with your students' needs, backgrounds, and math learning goals.

Coming soon:  Measles in K-12 Schools Toolkit

To support management of measles cases and exposures in K-12 schools, the Oregon Health Authority and ODE will be building a Measles in K-12 Schools Toolkit, which will be released prior to the 2026-2027 school year.

This toolkit will support a consistent approach to measles in Oregon’s schools with a focus on keeping schools open and maintaining continuity of education.

At this time, we strongly encourage schools to provide clear guidance to staff to obtain documentation of immunity and keep this on hand should a measles exposure occur. Documentation of immunity includes birth before 1957, laboratory documentation of a history of measles infection, laboratory evidence of measles immunity (i.e., antibody titers), and vaccination records.
