To: Superintendents, Principals, K-12 Public Information Officers, Charter School Leaders From: Oregon Department of Education Date: April 4, 2025 Re: Update on Receiving Federal Financial Assistance
Dear Partners,
Thank you for leading for students.
You may have read about or received this press release from the U.S. Department of Education stating that, to continue receiving federal financial assistance, the Oregon Department of Education and school districts must certify their compliance with Title VI and SFFA v. Harvard as described in a letter sent yesterday.
ODE has received the message and is working in partnership with the Governor’s Office to evaluate the request. ODE is committed to ensuring that the best interests of our students and our schools remain at the forefront of any discussions.
We appreciate your partnership in this important work and will follow up once we have more information to share. To that end, if you’ve received a similar message from the U.S. Department of Education, please discuss with us before taking action.
We remain committed to advancing policies that serve every student and reflect Oregon’s values while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws.
Please let us know how we can support you in navigating these complexities. ODE is actively assessing changes occurring at the federal level and maintains its Update on Federal Actions page to share any impacts on Oregon. If you have questions or concerns, please contact ODE at ode.communications@ode.oregon.gov.
