2. Important Reminder: COE Verification Requests for HEP/CAMP Eligibility

Graduation specialists who need COE verification for HEP/CAMP eligibility should submit their requests directly to OMESC. This ensures that student information is handled securely and in accordance with established protocols. To maintain accurate record-keeping, please avoid requesting COEs from data specialists.

3. Applications Now Open for the Immigrant/Refugee Student Success Advisory Group! – Apply by April 9, 2025

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is seeking passionate individuals—including students, educators, and community members—to serve on this advisory group. Members will help guide the implementation of the Immigrant/Refugee Student Success Plan, ensuring that policies, programs, and investments effectively support immigrant and refugee students across Oregon.

Who Should Apply?

  • According to ORS 329.849, the advisory group must include:
  • Individuals who identify as immigrant/refugees
  • Students who identify as immigrant/refugees
  • Representatives of community-based organizations serving immigrant/refugee communities
  • Education partners, including representatives from the Department of Early Learning and Care, Youth Development Oregon, and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission

Applicants from diverse backgrounds, roles, and lived experiences are encouraged to apply.

Commitment & Meeting Schedule

  • Virtual monthly meetings (third Thursday of each month, 1:00–3:00 PM PDT)
  • First meetings: May 22 & June 19, 2025. Then will resume in September
  • Annual in-person retreat (between school years)
  • Term length: Two or three years

5. Join the EAC: Open Council Director Positions Available – Apply by April 15, 2025

Are you interested in advocating for educators and students across Oregon, influencing policy, and supporting professional learning initiatives? If so, the Educator Advancement Council (EAC) invites you to apply to join their Council. The application deadline is April 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM.

Currently, recruitment is open for two Council Director seats:

  • High School Teacher
  • Elementary School Teacher

As a director, you will:

  • Work with education partners and leaders from across the state serving a two-year term
  • Add your voice and ideas to help influence state policy and help create change for Oregon Educators
  • Attend monthly meetings (virtual or in-person)
  • Have the opportunity to travel to innovative educational sites around the state

6. Join ODE’s Youth Advisory Council – Apply by May 9, 2025

Applications for the Oregon Department of Education Youth Advisory Council (YAC) are open! The YAC is open to youth ages 14-18 from across the state who are passionate about leadership and interested in how youth perspectives can influence state education programs. The goal of this council is to provide youth with a consistent platform to have a voice in shaping and implementing important educational initiatives.

Key Dates

  • The window to apply for the Youth Advisory Council is March 5 to May 9, 2025.
  • Members will be selected and notified no later than June 30, 2025.
  • The term of service for YAC members is 1 year, with the first meeting taking place late summer/ early fall 2025.

Action Needed

Background

Last year, Oregon passed Senate Bill 1552, which mandates the creation of a Youth Advisory Council (YAC) under the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) to ensure that the diverse experiences and needs of Oregon's youth are reflected in decision-making processes.

  • The YAC is open to youth ages 14-18 from across the state who are passionate about leadership and interested in how youth perspectives can influence state education programs. Our goal is to give youth the opportunity to have a voice in shaping and implementing important educational initiatives.
  • As a member of this inaugural class of youth leaders, YAC members will:
    • Work with the Oregon Department of Education to provide youth voice and input in policy making.
    • Connect with other youth and student leaders from across the state.
    • Lead the development and evaluation of current youth leadership and engagement programs.
    • Provide updates to the Governor and legislative teams on the council’s work.
  • YAC Member’s term of service is one year. Monthly meetings will be held virtually in the evenings, and we are thrilled to offer compensation to members for their service.

Oregon has strong nondiscrimination laws and policies in place to ensure that all Oregon students can be successful in school. That includes Oregon’s sanctuary law – a law that was passed with strong bipartisan support in the 1980’s. 2. NABE’s Position on the Executive Order Designating English as the Official Language

Considering recent developments, the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) is speaking out against the Executive Order signed on March 1, 2025, which designates English as the official language of the United States. NABE firmly opposes this move, emphasizing that it undermines the nation's rich multilingual heritage, including Indigenous languages and other long-established languages such as Spanish and French. 2. Know Your Rights: Train the Trainers Webinar (English/Spanish)

Asylum Seekers Solidarity Collective and Together Lab are excited to offer the next virtual Train the Trainer session for Know Your Rights on April 3, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This training is open to individuals from the Migrant Program or districts who are interested in learning how to present this valuable training within their own contexts and communities. 5. Oregon Spanish Spelling Bee Contest, Wilsonville, OR

Date: April 23, 2025 | Time: 10:00 AM

Attention all Spelling Bee enthusiasts! Dual Language Bilingual Education students in Oregon have the exciting opportunity to compete in the Annual Spanish Spelling Bee for 4th to 8th graders on April 23, 2025. The event will be held at Boones Ferry Primary School from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. This is a great chance for students to showcase their skills and compete with peers from across the state.
