To: School Counselors From: Jill Baker and Shanda Hochstetler, Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Date: 12/20/24 Re: OHA's Suicide Screening Brief & Invitation
Dear School Counselors,
The Oregon Health Authority’s (OHA) suicide prevention team, in collaboration with a team with representation from the Oregon Department of Education, Lines for Life, and the Willamette ESD, have developed an issue brief to respond to questions about OHA's recommendation to use evidence-based screening tools for suicide and/or the American School Counselors Association's Information-Gathering Tool (IGT).
The purpose of the issue brief is to increase clarity for school counselors who are planning and implementing suicide interventions in Oregon schools. In the issue brief, you will find links to resources, answers to frequently asked questions, and an invitation to join a workgroup to develop additional useful tools for school staff who are screening for suicide when an individual student has been referred as potentially at-risk.
