Oregon Department of Education Updates to Field

Diverse hands coming together

1. You Are Invited to Join the Oregon Multilingual Learner Collaborative!

The Oregon Multilingual Collaborative is a collaborative of professional educators, administrators, higher education and education partners who have a vested interest in elevating outcomes for multilingual learners through high-quality instructional programs and practices. Participants will learn from one another, with one another and share resources that advance the success of multilingual learners.

On the first Tuesday of each month, from 2:30-4:00 PM (PDT), the ML Collaborative will meet and address a problem of practice identified from feedback from the field related to issues faced in the world of education for multilingual learners.

Meeting dates for the 2024-25 academic year are:

  • November 5, 2024
  • December 3, 2024
  • January 7, 2025
  • February 4, 2025
  • March 4, 2025
  • April 1, 2025
  • May 6, 2025
  • June 3, 2025

Please use the Oregon Multilingual Learner Collaborative Form to share ideas on problems of practice you’d like to see addressed by the ML Collaborative.

1. Resource: Taller Gratuito de Educación Financiera con Jorge Ruiz, October 23, 2024

WestEd and Jorge Ruiz are coming together to provide students and their families with essential financial literacy skills for free! Covering topics ranging from budget management strategies, the importance of investing, to how to financially prepare students for the future and more – this workshop is sure to be insightful and help alleviate any stress around these topics. Join Jorge on October 23 starting at 5:00 PM. This workshop will be conducted in Spanish and is tailored to MEP students, parents, family members, and staff. Click here to register for this event.

In response to their Year 1 projects, the IDRC (Identification and Recruitment Consortium) has created short, easy-to-share "how-to" videos designed to assist staff. 2.Webinar: Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration: A Conversation with Award Winning Authors, October 15, 2024

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) is excited to host three Mexican American children’s book authors for a stimulating conversation about their work. These esteemed panelists are recipients of the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award, which honors authors and illustrators who write about the Mexican American experience. During the webinar, the authors will discuss their work and inspiration and will read excerpts from their books. Click here to register for this event.

4. Fall Literacy Conference: Igniting Curiosity & Cultivating Literacy for All, K-12, October 26, 2025

Designed to empower K-12 educators and college students, this gathering promises a rich variety of insights, strategies, and networking opportunities aimed at elevating literacy instruction for all learners with a special focus on multilingual learners.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Eugenia Mora-Flores, will share her insights, research, and strategies for effectively supporting multilingual learners in achieving academic success. Professor of Education at the University of Southern California and respected author, Dr. Mora-Flores brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the conference. Don't miss this inspiring address from a leader in the field!

The conference will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Parkrose High School, Portland, Oregon from 8:15 AM to 3:00 PM. Click here to register for this event.

5. Symposium: Teaching the Students We Share – In a New Era, November 9, 2024

You are invited to join the Civil Rights Project at their upcoming education symposium,Teaching the Students We Share – In a New Era. Millions of transnational students move between the U.S. and Mexico’s education systems, with most being Spanish speakers. As their numbers grow, quality education remains key to their success. Teachers need the right preparation and support to address their needs and appreciate their strengths. This conference will bring together educators, policymakers, and researchers to collaborate on how to better support educators. The symposium will be held at the Grand Hotel in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, on November 9, 2024, and only attendees with confirmed registration will be admitted to the symposium. 6.Conference: 56th Annual National Migrant Education Conference in San Francisco, California, April 13-16, 2024

Registration is now open for the 56th Annual National Migrant Education Conference! This is the largest migrant conference held in the United States and is open to everyone who works with migratory students and families across the country. There will be 175 diverse and high-quality workshop sessions which will include professional development training for all who work in the field of Migrant Education. Be inspired by presentations by recipients of NASDME's Al Wright Memorial Migrant Scholarship, a highlight of the Conference each year. The conference will be held in San Francisco, California, from April 13 to 16, 2025. Click here to register for this event.
