Hello Oregon Educators,
As you begin the school year with your students, we want to share some exciting literacy news!
We are thrilled to announce that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded ODE more than $11.5 million for the first year of a 5-year grant to advance literacy for Oregon’s highest-need schools through the Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) grant.
This award is the first of an anticipated 5-year grant that could total up to over $57 million with funds flowing as soon as the 25-26 school year.
This grant continues the momentum around literacy and complements the work already underway through the Early Literacy Success Initiative to ensure every child has access to exceptional literacy instruction. The program will particularly focus on closing opportunity gaps for historically underserved students, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
Ninety-five percent of the funds are required to be subgranted to districts and other eligible entities through a competitive process to serve ages birth-grade 12. These federal grant funds will support Oregon’s students in strengthening their access to high-quality literacy resources aligned with the Early Literacy Success Initiative, including professional development, high-dosage tutoring, extended learning, hiring literacy coaches, specialists and interventionists, and implementing research-aligned and culturally relevant curriculum. Additionally, this grant will fund the development of a Comprehensive Statewide Literacy Plan for Oregon.
Oregon earned this award because of leaders like you who are committed to improving literacy outcomes for scholars in your school districts.
ODE will have additional information available in the upcoming months and will continue to provide updates on this exciting opportunity for literacy in Oregon.
Thank you for leading for literacy!
Sincerely,
Angelica Cruz Director of Literacy
