To: Oregon Math Education Listserve From: ODE Math Team Date: June 5, 2024 Re: May/June Math Educator Update
Dear math education leaders,
As the 2023-24 school year ends, we are reminded of just how many educators have helped to create positive math experiences for students across Oregon. Your impact reaches far beyond the classroom walls.
Take a moment to reflect on the achievements — both significant and subtle — from this academic year. Whether it was by helping a struggling student grasp a concept, supporting a quiet learner finding their voice, or facilitating a lively classroom discussion sparked by a math problem, the influence of educators reverberates through these moments of growth. To help with this reflective routine, this Edutopia article highlights practices and tools to aid teachers in their reflection process for ongoing development and setting goals for the next school year.
Thank you for being more than just math teachers—you are mentors, motivators, and champions of learning. We hope you have a restful summer.

Public Survey of Oregon’s Accountability System
The work called for in House Bill 2656 includes the development of a framework for the future of Reimagining Oregon’s Accountability System. As part of that work, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is interested in engaging with people across the state to hear their thoughts regarding Oregon's education system and the role that accountability can play in providing an excellent education to all students.
-
ODE is reaching out to ask you to complete – and share widely among your networks – a survey on these topics to ensure that we have a broad swath of the state represented.
-
You can also reach the survey through the webpage on Reimagining Oregon’s Accountability System on ODE’s website. The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, June 7th.

Meet a Mathematician: Inspiring Math Education
Meet a Mathematician aims to share stories of mathematicians from different backgrounds to introduce students to role models and foster a sense of community. Through interviews, articles, and interactive sessions, teachers gain insights into mathematicians’ work, research, and passion for their subject. The platform introduces students to diverse role models to increase the visibility of academic mathematicians from underrepresented groups while advocating for a more inclusive mathematics community that reflects the diversity in the world.

Opportunities for Educators
Applied Mathematics Mentorship Program (AMMP)
The Curtis Center at UCLA is launching a Grade 7 data analysis elective focused on Heat Islands, a critical issue in urban communities impacted by global warming. The curriculum was collaboratively developed by an industry-university-school team with the intention of providing “windows and mirrors” that allow students to view mathematics as a tool to make sense of the world. Here are the key details:
-
Investigation Topic: Students will explore environmental heat islands in their neighborhoods using sensing hardware and data democratization software.
-
STEM Journey: Through videos and vignettes, students will engage with a diverse group of STEM professionals, learning about their personal journeys in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
-
Summer 2024 AMMP Camp: Teachers can participate in a six-day training at UCLA from July 24-26 and 29-31, 2024. Teacher training is provided at no cost, thanks to a Nicholas Endowment grant. There is a cost for student classroom materials.
Secondary Math Teacher PD Opportunity for the M2Studio Pilot Program
M2Studio is a web-based tool that supports students in modeling open-ended, authentic problems using mathematics. Participants will receive a $1,500 stipend, professional development credits, and an opportunity to collaborate with the research team. Participants will also get to use a technology-enhanced curriculum module designed around M2Studio with students. More information can be found on this recruitment flyer.
