CSI/TSI update at the next Formula Grant Office Hours!

In December 2023, several school districts received notification regarding a Federal School Improvement (FSI) status update with schools being identified for Comprehensive Support (CSI) or Targeted Support (TSI).  Identification of the noted schools is based on accountability data from the 2022-23 school year.

The notification also highlighted that by September 30, 2024, all currently identified CSI and TSI schools must submit a school-level plan and corresponding budget items to ODE. These plans should be developed in accordance with the Aligning for Student Success - Integrated Guidance, specifically community engagement and needs assessment processes.

Please join us on Tuesday, February 20th at 10:00 am as District and School Effectiveness (DSE) team members join the regularly scheduled Formula Grant (Titles I-A, II-A, IV-A and V-B) Office Hours to discuss CSI and TSI school-level plan requirements and answer questions.

Braiding funding sources to support educational initiatives ensures consistency, eliminates duplication of services, and can allow for more comprehensive support than would otherwise be available. In ESSA Quick Reference Brief: Braiding Funds learn the difference between braiding and blending, requirements that must be met when braiding with federal funds, and review sample scenarios for braiding federal funds.

February Black History

Carter G. Woodson was a scholar whose dedication to celebrating the historic contributions of Black people led to the establishment of Black History Month, marked every February since 1976. Woodson fervently believed that Black people should be proud of their heritage and all Americans should understand the largely overlooked achievements of Black Americans.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture's Learning Lab collections utilize objects, documents, imagery, and videos to enhance content knowledge, hone historical thinking skills, and inspire users to see themselves as agents of change. The lab includes numerous resources for teachers and students of all grade levels. The featured image here highlights artifacts from the collection to be shared with young learners PreK-3. FCC Announces E-Rate Funding for Wi-Fi on School Buses

Wifi on Buses

The Federal Communications Commission announced that it will allow E-Rate funding to be used to support Wi-Fi on school buses beginning in funding year 2024 as the Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) program is set to sunset.  The ECF program has provided unprecedented resources to help students get and stay connected for online learning, with hundreds of school districts using this support to equip school buses with Wi-Fi connections. The first wave of applications for E-Rate dollars are due at the end of this month.

The E-Rate program was authorized by Congress as part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and created by the Commission in 1997 to enhance access to advanced telecommunications and information services for all public and nonprofit elementary and secondary school classrooms and libraries. The FFC’s action clarifies that the use of Wi-Fi, or other similar access point technologies, on school buses serves an educational purpose and the provision of such service is therefore eligible for E-Rate funding.  The Commission has previously found that the off-campus use of certain services is integral to the education of students and has permitted funding of such services through E-Rate.

Spotlight on HB 4082: A Commitment to Summer Learning!

Access and Opportunity Graphic

We're excited to share news about House Bill 4082, a transformative piece of legislation designed to bolster summer learning programs across our state. With a generous allocation of $50 million in state funding for the summer of 2024, HB 4082 represents a strategic investment in our children's future, endorsed by Governor Kotek herself.

This bill isn't just a short-term fix; it's a gateway to sustained educational enrichment by creating a work group to study expanded learning. HB 4082 is crafted to support immediate needs for summer 2024 while laying the groundwork for a long-term investment in our youth. Inspired by the successful framework of 21st CCLC programs, it aims to foster robust partnerships between school districts and community-based organizations, ensuring that our summer learning programs are as impactful as they are innovative.

Governor Kotek's support underscores the bill's importance and potential to create lasting educational opportunities. As we look forward to the enhancements this bill promises for summer learning, we remain committed to advocating for the resources and partnerships necessary to realize its full potential. Stay tuned for updates on HB 4082's progress as they emerge.

Do you use TransAct?

TransAct

If your district uses TransAct, we want to hear from you! As ODE considers whether to renew the Transact contract beyond the 2023-2024 school year, the Federal Systems Team has developed a short survey to help us understand the statewide impact of this service and which resources districts find most useful.

Please make your voice heard by responding to this short survey.
