Resources for National Hispanic Heritage Month

Good morning,

While most heritage month celebrations begin at the start of the month, National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th to commemorate the anniversary of the national independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic-American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. First started as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson, it was expanded to a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.

We hope you find the resources in this newsletter helpful for use in your classroom. Heritage months are a good reminder for the teaching of a more inclusive curriculum, but there is no reason to limit the inclusion to a single month. A recent report from The Century Foundation finds that all students, not only under-represented students, have higher academic achievement when exposed to inclusive curricula.

September 28th Workshop on Confronting Antisemitism

This past weekend, the Jewish community celebrated Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Rosh Hashanah and the High Holidays mark a time of new beginnings, deep self-reflection, and hope for a brighter future.

Unfortunately, in Oregon and around the country, members of the Jewish community are also experiencing a rise in antisemitism. The Jewish Federation of Portland is hosting an evening session on how to advocate when incidents of antisemitism occur in schools.

The ADL offers teachers and parents a collection of "Table Talks" about a variety of issues. Now available in both Spanish and English,  this recently published guide to Antisemitism Today is intended for grades 6-12.

Oregon Kid Governor

Did you know it’s free to participate in Oregon Kid Governor? It’s open to all of Oregonian’s fifth graders!

The 2024 Oregon Kid Governor program has officially launched, and we want you and your classroom to participate!

The Oregon Kid Governor is a free civics program supported by the Oregon Capitol Foundation to give Oregonian fifth graders the opportunity to learn about civics education.

The program provides free tool kits and curriculum for teachers. It’s a great opportunity to help fifth graders across Oregon learn about their government.
