Supporting Gender Expansive Students in the Arts

Whether it’s navigating which choral group to sign up for, what role to audition for in the school musical, or considering what to share about their identity in an art project, gender expansive and LGBTQ2SIA+ students have a complex landscape to navigate in which the support of arts educators is essential. The Oregon Department of Education recently released Supporting Gender Expansive Students: Guidance for Schools, a foundation of policies and resources that applies to all classroom settings, a helpful foundation for arts educators to understand the responsibilities they hold in supporting gender expansive students in their programs. Educator Opportunities

McCarthy Dressman Education Foundation Academic Enrichment Grants

The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation offers Academic Enrichment Grants designed to develop in-class and extra-curricular programs that improve student learning. 

The Academic Enrichment Grants provide funding for programs that nurture the intellectual, artistic and creative abilities of children from low-income households. The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation awards grants to individuals in amounts up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of $20,000 over two years, provided the eligibility requirements continue to be met.

Submission deadline April 15th. Apply early - only the first 350 applications are accepted.

NEA Foundation Student Success Grants

The NEA Foundation wants to support educators engaging students in project-based and deeper learning to support the development of skills and dispositions contributing to success and fulfillment in a changing world.

Grants are available to current members of the National Education Association who are educators in public schools or public institutions of higher education. We especially encourage education support professionals to apply.

Grants between $1,500 and $5,000 are available. Grants fund activities for 12 months from the date of the award.

Next Application Period: March 1, 2023 - April 27, 2023

Media Arts Educator Survey from Media Arts Edu (MAE)

Media Arts Educators, please take this survey from Media Arts Edu to help describe the state of media arts education across the United States. This will assist us MAE in servicing the field, advancing the discipline and determining the interest in forming a professional association. 

BRIC Foundation, Visual Effects Society, and California Arts, Media, and Entertainment presents Careers in Visual Effects: Speaker Series

Internationally acclaimed VES artists and professionals will speak about their work and different career pathways in visual effects. The series will be streamed live on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 2pm. Students will have the opportunity to interact with the speakers through a facilitated Q&A session. Teachers who register will receive information about each speaker and material to share with their classes prior to the events. This series will introduce students to career paths for the new BRIC registered apprenticeship for animation, VFX and games. Oregon ACTE Annual Conference in Bend April 12-14 

Join colleagues from around the state in April at the Oregon ACTE Annual Conference at Bend’s Riverhouse Conference Center.  Register now and consider submitting a proposal for presenting at this fun and informative gathering.  Plan to attend on Wednesday, April 12 to network in a Professional Learning Community with others in your career area.

CMAF: Music Teachers of Excellence Program

The Music Teachers of Excellence award supports educators who demonstrate exemplary teaching and student learning, and are committed to making a positive impact on their school and community while raising awareness for the broader cause of music education.

The application process includes narrative responses, recommendations and a video lesson demonstration. The 2023 application is now open through Friday, March 3, 2023 at 11:59PM CT. Visit the CMAF website for more information.

Youth Opportunities

Doodle for Google Contest for K-12 Students

This annual contest encourages students to think about this year’s theme, then imagine and create a Google Doodle — a piece of art that incorporates the letters G-o-o-g-l-e — based on how the prompt inspires them. This year’s theme is “I am grateful for…”.

The contest is open for entries until March 7, 2023 11:59 p.m. PST. See website for more information

ENOUGH! Plays to End Gun Violence Youth Playwriting Opportunity

ENOUGH! Plays to End Gun Violence has opened a call for submissions from teen writers (ages 13-19) of 10 minute plays confronting the issue of gun violence. Six plays will be selected by a panel of astonishing writers (Idris Goodwin, Lauren Gunderson, Samuel Hunter, David Henry Hwang, Antoinette Nwandu, Lloyd Suh, and Octavio Solis) to be published and performed nationwide and the writers will receive $500. 

The deadline for submissions is April 20, 2023.

Kennedy Center: VSA International Young Soloists Competition

Each year, outstanding young musicians with disabilities, between the ages of 14-25 at the time of the application deadline, receive this $2,000 award. Applicants can apply as instrumental or vocal soloists, or as ensembles. All genres of music are accepted, including but not limited to classical, jazz, hip-hop, rap, rock/alt-rock, pop, indie, bluegrass, folk, country, R&B/blues, Latin, and world. All instruments, including voice, are accepted.

OK Challenge from OK YOU, the Portland Art Museum, and Weiden + Kennedy

Submissions are open for the OK Challenge, a call for High School students across Oregon and Washington to submit creative activities that can help others. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges who are looking for your ideas, energy and authenticity.

Pastel Society of the West Coast Scholarship Opportunity

The Pastel Society of the West Coast is pleased to offer $2000 Art Scholarships for 2023

The successful candidate should be planning to pursue a career in art, and must be a high school senior, or college freshman, sophomore, or junior enrolled in a junior or four-year accredited college or university with enrollment in an art class. Learn more and submit an application here

Western Governors’ Association: Celebrate the West Art Competition 2023

The Western Governors’ Foundation is excited to launch the 2023 Celebrate the West regional art competition, sponsored by Americans for the Arts. Celebrate the West is a regional art competition that challenges high school students to create works inspired by their state. 

To enter the competition, students must live in one of the 17 Western states and two U.S. territories whose Governors participate in the bipartisan WGA and be enrolled in grades 9-12. Once completed, their work must be submitted using a digital entry form

Deadline for all submissions is April 30, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. MST.

Artist, Arts Organization and Partner Opportunities

Oregon Community Foundation Creative Heights Grants

The Creative Heights initiative aims to increase Oregon’s cultural visibility and vitality while supporting unique opportunities for Oregonians to experience innovative arts and culture. Up to $1 million in projects will be funded annually with grants from $10,000 to $100,000 per project.

The LOI application form is currently open. Letters of Inquiry (LOI) must be submitted online by 5:00pm (PST) on February 15, 2023 (Wednesday). You may preview the application without logging in.

The Roundhouse Foundation Grants

The Roundhouse Foundation focuses their work in and across four areas that are fundamental to thriving rural communities – Arts & Culture, Environmental Stewardship, Social Services and Education. They understand the interconnections of these focus areas and value opportunities that work at their intersections.

They support rural Oregon communities, including Tribal communities. All proposals, regardless of an applicant’s location, must have a clear and compelling benefit to rural Oregon. Organizations that fit within the focus areas and eligibility guidelines may submit a proposal to one of the Open Call grant cycles.

Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF) BIPOC Artists Fund

WESTAF is happy to announce the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Artists Fund, a new fund designed in partnership with WESTAF’s Leaders of Color Network that provides resources to and for BIPOC artists living and working in the 16 states and jurisdictions in the WESTAF region in order to advance their own artistic practice and goals.

Through liberatory grantmaking, WESTAF aspires to be in solidarity with artists by centering their ability to fund the needs that they identify as they impact their artistic practice. WESTAF seeks to invest in the wellbeing and safety of BIPOC artists, cultural practitioners, and collaboratives by providing no-strings-attached funding.

Native Arts and Culture Foundation LIFT and SHIFT Programs for Native Artists

The LIFT – Early Career Support for Native Artists program will provide critical support to early career Native artists with one-year awards to develop and realize new projects. The program encourages artists to uplift communities, advance positive social change, point courageously toward environmental sustainability, and foster communal meaning making.

The SHIFT – Transformative Change and Indigenous Arts program supports artist and community-driven projects responding to social change issues through a Native lens. The program focuses on efforts that are built upon community cultural assets, resilience, and strengths and draws increased attention to Native communities, perspectives and challenges, shifting a national narrative of invisibility, misunderstanding and misappropriation.

PAM CUT and Oregon Arts Commission: Oregon Media Arts Fellowship

The Oregon Media Arts Fellowship is a biannual award provided by the Oregon Arts Commission and overseen by the Portland Art Museum’s Center for an Untold Tomorrow (PAM CUT) for outstanding achievement and creativity in the field of media arts in the state of Oregon. 

Applications for fellowships will be accepted from January 30 – March 31, 2023. Learn more and apply here

National Endowment for the Arts: Challenge America Grants

Challenge America offers support primarily to small organizations for projects in all artistic disciplines that extend the reach of the arts to groups/communities with rich and dynamic artistic and cultural contributions to share that are underserved. 

This category may be a good entry point for organizations that are new to applying for federal funding. See Applicant Eligibility for more information.

Oregon Open Learning Featured Resource

The Oregon Open Learning Hub is a digital resource repository and collaboration space for educators, administrators, and other educational partners to curate, create, and remix open educational resources (OER). The Hub is a portal to over 50,000 openly licensed resources available on OER Commons, searchable by grade level, subject, and standard.
