Oregon Math Educator Update - December 2022

snowflake

December gives math educators time for some interdisciplinary connections. Educators can put the A and M in STEAM on December 27th with National Make Cut-Out Snowflakes Day! You can help your students make explicit ties to math with Stanford University’s Explore Math with Paper Snowflake Art blog post. To expand the folding fun to a more complex art-math connection, check out this Paper Polyhedra Models site!

Educators can also connect this concept to history instruction: Plato associated the dodecahedron with the universe in a metaphysical way, and some sources say he also believed that the Earth itself was a dodecahedron. What do you and your students think? If they love making polyhedra models or snowflakes, check out this link for the paper dodecahedral model used by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Connecting STEM and STEAM is a terrific way to engage and excite elementary students with math.. For more elementary or middle school math resources, contact your regional STEM Hub. For example, Southern Oregon STEAM Hub and Central Oregon STEM Hub have an exciting opportunity for Oregon teachers of 3rd - 8th grades to join in Dear Data Professional Development. Educators who teach in districts served by Central Oregon and Southern Oregon will receive a stipend and the necessary supplies. Any Oregon educator outside of those regions may register and purchase their own supplies. Register by Friday, December 16th if you are interested!

Now Recruiting Math and ELA Educators for OSAS Test Scoring

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is seeking educators to remotely score ELA and Mathematics test items for the Oregon Statewide Assessment System. Educators will deepen their understanding of hand-scored items and especially the rubrics used to score them. Successful applicants will be compensated at an hourly rate and expected to commit to a minimum of 4 hours of work per week over a period of 4-6 weeks.

The initial training for this project will occur on March 17, 2023, in Salem, OR. Substitute and travel costs for this training day will be covered by ODE. Following that training, qualified raters will then remotely score items during their own off-contract time throughout spring. The deadline for submitting an application is Thursday, February 9, 2023 and ODE will notify successful applicants by February 13, along with information on next steps.   For additional information, please review the Scoring Recruitment Notice. Please contact Andrew Byerley, Mathematics Assessment Specialist, with any questions.

Oregon Mathematics Webinar Series - January 2023

This fall, Oregon educators were invited to join us for three webinar series to support the work of educators in (1) instructional materials adoption, (2) communicating with high school counselors and post-secondary admission faculty about high school math pathways, and (3) sharing the vision of high school math pathways with K-12 teachers and higher education faculty.

There are two additional webinars that you can still sign for in January 2023 with the links below.  Look for possible additional offerings posted on the ODE mathematics page and through this newsletter.

Recording Links for Past ODE Webinars

Webinar recordings are available for sessions held this past fall and are in the process of verifying Closed Captioning before they can be posted on the ODE website.  In the meantime, a Google document has been set up so that you can access the recordings and the slides for these sessions.  Feel free to share these links and look for them to be posted on the ODE website when they are ready.

Additionally, recordings from the webinar series in 2019-2020 are also available in the document above and will be posted on the ODE website when the Closed Captioning can be verified.  Sessions included a variety of topics such as San Francisco USD sharing their detracking experience, Jo Boaler sharing on 21st learning & Data Science, and The New Teacher Project report on the Opportunity Myth.

Thank you for your patience as we work to get these posted officially as soon as possible.  Any questions about these recordings can be directed to Mark Freed, ODE Math Education Specialist, at mark.freed@ode.oregon.gov
