Arts Ed Spotlight
Arts and Computer Science Connections
This month’s spotlight highlights the many connections between arts learning and the field of computer science in advance of Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11). Media arts and computer science are deeply intertwined subject areas, and many careers such as video game design and UX design are informed by skills learned in both subjects. This being said, all arts areas may consider the intersections of computer science and technology within the latest contemporary work in their respective fields - computers and technology continue to converge with work in the arts in a myriad of ways.
If you’d like to explore connections with computer science and the arts, this interview with Oregon educator Shawn Patrick Higgins by Saber Khan, Education Community Director at the Processing Foundation, explores Easy but Awesome: Free and Open-Source Creative Tools for Middle-School Students. Also from the Processing Foundation Education Portal is the createCanvas podcast series, and accompanying set of teacher resources, including links to online intro courses for educators and course and lesson materials for students.

Applications Open for the 2023 Oregon Fringe Festival
Students, local artists, national artists, and international artists are ALL encouraged to apply to the 2023 Oregon Fringe Festival. The roster includes music, theatre, visual art, film, dance, spoken word, and more.
Not only is this a fantastic opportunity to present something to a fun and diverse audience, but it's also an opportunity to experiment with new ideas and concepts. Even more exciting, the festival offers up to three $1,000 honoraria to non-student artists whose creative work is boundary-breaking, unconventional, excites discussion and explores different perspectives of a held position, principle, and/or belief.
Priority consideration deadline is Dec. 12, and regular consideration deadline is Dec. 26.
To be considered for an honorarium, applications must be submitted by the Priority Consideration Deadline.
People can contact oregonfringe@sou.edu or apply online at oregonfringefestival.org/apply-now.
