Oregon Math Educator Update - October 2022

Indigenous Peoples' Day

Indigenous People's Day graphic

HB 2526 in 2021 designated the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples' Day in Oregon. Oregon recognizes and acknowledges the significant contributions of its nine federally recognized tribal nations, as well as those of the many indigenous peoples across the land. Along with International Indigenous Peoples' Day in August, these days are designated to promote awareness of the rich histories and contributions of Native Americans, and provide an opportunity for non-indigenous peoples to cultivate a community that honors and respects the diverse history of this land.

Oregon has many different indigenous communities including nine federally recognized tribes: Burns Paiute of Harney County; Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians; Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde; Confederated Tribes of Siletz; Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Reservation; Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs; Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians; Coquille Indian Tribe; and Klamath Tribes.

Tribal History/Shared History is a Native American curriculum designed for inclusion in Oregon K-12 schools. These essential understandings, lessons, professional learning modules, and place-based experiences are developed in close partnership with tribal members and communities. Students cannot learn about Oregon without an understanding of the peoples who have lived here since time immemorial. Be sure to check out the math lessons at the Tribal History/Shared History site, such as the fourth grade unit on Pacific lamprey, the eighth grade unit that links the Pythagorean Theorem to traditional housing styles, and much more. If you’ve already used any of these lessons, scroll down in the newsletter to see an opportunity to participate in research.

Moonshot Flight Crew 2023 OPEN RECRUITMENT

moonshot flight crew logo

This week we launched the national recruitment campaign for the next Moonshot Flight Crew cohort. The goal is to find youth representatives from all 50 states. The commitment to expand the Flight Crew to include youth representatives from across the country is part of STEM Next's recently announced commitment to the National Space Council's effort to inspire more girls and young people of color to pursue STEM careers.

Let's find inspiring youth who have found their spark in out-of-school STEM!

The ‘M’ in STEM and STEAM

Last month we wrote about the importance of integrating mathematics in other subjects, particularly those in STEM and STEAM. As a reminder, here is the joint position statement on STEM from the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

This month, we highlight an exciting opportunity for math teachers to work with marine scientists to develop meaningful projects. Oregon Sea Grant is looking for middle school and high school math and science teachers (from Oregon, of course) to work in small teams – one marine scientist, one math teacher, and one science teacher - to develop a curriculum unit around a marine phenomenon. Check out this flyer.  You can find the registration link here and more information on the project in general, including past units. Participating teachers receive a $1500 stipend, but watch out - the deadline to apply is today (Oct 19)!

As part of the Oregon Mathways Project, the Oregon Coast STEM Hub is piloting a +1 high school Financial Algebra course. The Financial Algebra Course engages students with real-world financial applications while maintaining deep mathematical rigor. The 10 units include: Taxes, Checking, Savings, Budgeting, Intro to Investing, Investing Strategies, Types of Credit, Managing Credit, Paying for College and Insurance. This course will be heavily collaboration and project based. Students will be required to use google drive, docs and sheets on a regular basis. This course has a distinction of Algebra 1 or higher.

If you would like to see this course in action either in person or via Zoom please contact Alisha Powell with Lincoln County School District.

For other STEM/STEAM Hub news, be sure to check out this website!
