Oregon Math Educator Update  ::  May 2022

Flowers

May is Teacher Appreciation Month, and as flowers bloom all around us, we believe this is the perfect metaphor to capture the work of educators. Seeing our students grow and learn is akin to watching spring burst into color around us. On behalf of all of us at ODE, we are so grateful to each of you for all you have done to make this year – the third school year impacted by a pandemic – as successful for students as possible. Thank you for your care, resilience, and high expectations for Oregon learners.

May is also Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and there are a number of teaching resources that can help your students learn more about the history of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, as well as their contributions to mathematics. The Library of Congress has some general resources for teachers, and, in particular, we’d like to highlight some contributions of Native Hawaiians. The University of Hawai’i at Manoa has developed the first-in-the-world ethnomathematics program that seeks to expand our collective knowledge and practice of humanizing mathematics. Ethnomathematics is the study of the relationship between mathematics and culture, and graduates of the UHM Ethnomathematics program are empowered to be locally-minded, global citizens through a sense of purpose and a sense of place. Learn more about ethnomathematics by visiting the UHM Ethnomathematics Curriculum Library and by listening to the TODOS Podcast on UHM Ethnomathematics.

2021 Math Standards and Data Reasoning

The 2021 Oregon Math Standards introduce Data Reasoning instruction for all students in K-12.  The revised standards used the GAISE II framework adopted by the American Statistical Association (ASA) in fall 2021, which is framed around four components of statistical problem solving:

  1. formulating investigative questions,
  2. collecting and considering data,
  3. analyzing, summarizing, and describing data, and
  4. interpreting data and answering investigative questions.

Educators can check out the flow of the K-12 content standards on this learning progression in Padlet used as part of the Oregon content panel review. ASA has also provided additional information about K-12 classroom data resources including the STatistics Education Web (STEW) lesson site. Additional questions about the revised K-12 data reasoning standards can be sent to Mark Freed, ODE Mathematics Specialist.

You Are Invited to Join the Oregon Math Leaders Network

The Oregon Math Leaders Network is a community of math practitioners who work together to implement and support math teaching and learning in Oregon. Participants include teacher leaders, TOSAs, program administrators, college faculty, and math community partners. If you identify as a math leader, you are invited!

During the 2021-22 school year, the network meets virtually on the third Thursday of each month, with both morning (8:30-9:30am PT) and afternoon (3:30-4:30pm) options. To receive a calendar invitation and Zoom link, please join the Oregon Math Leaders Google Group. If you’re already a member, you don’t need to sign up again -- you’ll get the invite and link. Our final meetings of the 2021-22 school year will be Thursday, May 19, 2022.

Math Visioning Tool

In order for districts to access the full potential of the Oregon Math Project Cornerstones in their 2021 Oregon Math Standards implementation, educators and leaders must first start by identifying what’s working in existing math programs, while also identifying needed shifts.

To help districts with this work, Multnomah ESD’s Math Leadership and Coaching Network has developed a Math Program Visioning Tool that is aligned with the 2021 Oregon Math Standards.

This tool provides an asset-based and equity-centered approach to creating a vision for the future of math learning and teaching. It also invites districts to identify partners and shareholders in their math program. It’s designed to be a living document that can be adapted for local context and continuous improvement. Districts are encouraged to use this tool prior to selecting a new math curriculum, designing math pathways, and/or developing your math professional development plans, as a collaborative visioning process will help align and focus your efforts.

For additional information, please contact Amy Lindahl, K-12 Math and Science School Improvement Specialist at Multnomah ESD.

Finally, Another HUGE Thank You!

The ODE Math Team would like to thank you for supporting the students in your classrooms and communities throughout the 2021-22 school year! As this school year comes to a close, we wish each of you a healthy, restful, and rejuvenating summer. The Math Educator Update will take a break over the summer, but we’ll be back in August to welcome to you the 2022-23 school year. Take good care of yourselves!
