ODE’s Commitment to Equity and Access in Math Education

Oregon Math Project

ODE is committed to supporting an equitable mathematics system that intentionally broadens the participation and engagement of all students while harnessing the cultural, linguistic, and mathematical competencies they bring to the classroom. The vision of the Oregon Math Project is to engineer a system of equitable and rigorous mathematics teaching and learning where all students are invited to the table with an authentic sense of belonging, purpose, and joy throughout their K-12 learning.

Understand ODE’s commitments to equitable mathematics education by visiting the ODE Mathematics webpage.

Continuing the Journey: Mathematics Learning 2021 and Beyond

“With so many interruptions and variations in student experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, there are those who assume that students will have lost a year or more of learning. But students did learn during the pandemic.” So begins Continuing the Journey: Mathematics Learning 2021 and Beyond, a joint publication from NCTM, NCSM, and ASSM.

ODE joins the math education community in our commitment to provide equitable learning experiences through the pillars of Grade-Level Content, Equitable and Effective Teaching Practices, and Advocacy. Find more ideas, questions to consider, and resources in the full publication.

The revised math standards were presented to the Oregon State Board of Education at the September meeting for first reading.  ODE staff will be presenting again at the October 2021 meeting for a second reading and possible adoption. The latest versions of the can be found on the ODE Math Standards page.

Additional resources that now can be found on the ODE standards include:

  • Crosswalk between Oregon draft (2021) and CCSS (2010)
  • Draft guidance documents by grade level

Updates will be included in the math educator update newsletter. Please contact Mark Freed, Mathematics Education Specialist, with any questions or for more information.

PAEMST logo

We know that great teaching can be found in every corner of the country and we need your help to find it! Show your appreciation by nominating a teacher for The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) – the highest honors bestowed on STEM educators by the United States government.

We encourage you to join us for a PAEMST Informational Webinar, where you can learn about the program and how to nominate outstanding STEM educators in your network.

The webinar will be hosted on October 12th, at 6:00 PM ET. To register for the webinar, click here! Should you have any questions, please reach out to info@paemst.org and a PAEMST Team Member will be happy to assist you.

Oregon’s Interim Assessment System and Tools for Teachers

Tools for Teachers logo

Oregon students and educators continue to have free access to a high-quality, standards-aligned interim assessment system and Tools for Teachers resources. Oregon’s interim assessments are optional “just-in-time” blocks that can easily be aligned to grade- and course-level units. These interim assessment blocks provide educators with actionable data about student knowledge and abilities to help target instruction to meet students’ individual learning needs.

Oregon’s interim assessments are seamlessly linked to the Tools for Teachers platform, which includes student performance progressions, instructional resources, formative assessment strategies, and professional learning resources that are created by educators, for educators. For more information, contact Andrew Byerley, Mathematics Assessment Specialist.

Oregon Open Learning Opportunites

Oregon Open Learning

New grant opportunity! Are you an Oregon secondary teacher who has experience working with students who are emergent bilingual? The Oregon Open Learning team invites you to apply individually or as a part of a team to participate in a new grant opportunity for the 2021-22 school year focused on developing open educational resources (OER) to support students who are emergent bilingual. Grant award: $5000. More information and the grant application can be found on ODE’s OER Grant & Professional Learning Opportunities webpage.  You can also view the One-pager announcement for more information.

Upcoming OER Workshop: Do you want to learn more about open educational resources (OER) and the Oregon Open Learning Hub? The Oregon Open Learning Workshop is a virtual professional learning event that will provide participants an opportunity to learn about open educational resources (OER) and the Oregon Open Learning Hub, Oregon’s K-12 repository for OER.

Join the Oregon Open Learning team for an OER Workshop on Tuesday, October 12 from 4:00pm-5:30pm (PST). Register today

Oregon Math Leaders Network

The Oregon Math Leaders Network is a community of math practitioners who work together to implement and support math teaching and learning in Oregon. Participants include teacher leaders, TOSAs, program administrators, college faculty, and math community partners. If you identify as a math leader, you are! We support each other personally and professionally by asking critical questions, collaborating on problems of practice, and sharing our work.

Because this network spans the state, the topics of our collaboration will generally be driven by district needs. Examples of such activities include:

  • Professional learning opportunities, for both teachers and administrators.
  • Curating and sharing promising resources and effective strategies.
  • Support for evaluation and implementation of instructional materials.
  • Support for building-level activities such as lesson study groups and one-on-one discussions.
  • Networking with other math leaders across Oregon.

For the 2021-22 school year, the network plans to meet virtually on the third Thursday of each month from 3:30-4:30pm. To receive a calendar invitation and Zoom link, please join the Oregon Math Leaders Google Group. If you’re already a member, you don’t need to sign up again -- you’ll get the invite and link. Our next meeting will be Thursday, October 21, 2021. Hope to see you online!

IMAGINE MATH CLASS Video Contest

The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) invite groups of U.S. middle and high school students to participate in the Fall 2021 video competition for youth to imagine the future of math class in an anti-racist world.

This contest is open to youth in the United States who are ages 13-18, in groups of 2-10 students. The teachers assisting student groups can use the Gather Voices website to upload videos of 3 minutes or less to imagine the way they want the math class of the future to be.

Choose Your Prompt :

  • IMAGINE MATH CLASS – IN COLOR
  • IMAGINE MATH CLASS – WITH YOUTH AT THE CENTER
  • IMAGINE FREEDOM + MATH CLASS = ....

Ten winners will be chosen to screen their videos at a public online event in late October 2021. Winning teams are eligible to receive $500 worth of Mathical award-winning books to share with the students at their school. These are graphic novels, and thrillers, and novels about gaming, and biographies, and all kinds of stories with math and youth of color at the center. Submissions accepted through October 15, 2021. Looking for professional learning that will support your math teaching and leading?

Registration is now open for this fall's course designed for preK-8 teachers and teacher leaders in mathematics: CI 513 Enhancing Algebraic Thinking: Generalizations about Operations. See flyer for details.

Other courses this year will include the preK-12 courses:

  • Winter 2022 - CI 515 Developing Geometric Thinking and Concepts
  • Spring 2022 - CI 518 Implementing Mathematics Reform

Each class meets Tuesdays from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Note: due to an abundance of caution for you, your families, and your students, this Fall's course has shifted to an online synchronous format. At this time, we plan to return to the Attend Anywhere format (which means you have your choice about format––face-to-face or online synchronous (Zoom)) for Winter and Spring.

Interested in knowing more about this program? These courses are part of the Deepening Understanding of Mathematics Teaching and Learning Series at Portland State University; they can be used for the Mathematics Instructional Leader Specialization from TSPC or a certificate of completion from PSU. Click here for program application information and scholarship options.
