Oregon Department of Education - Oregon achieves - together

Dear School and District Leaders and Education Partners,

Today we are sharing a 2021-22 School Year Discussion Draft of the Ready Schools, Safe Learners (RSSL) guidance, outlining changes under consideration for the upcoming school year and highlighting our pathway to opening school for full-time in-person instruction this fall.

The purpose of this Discussion Draft document is to structure input from school & district leaders and community & education partners to ODE about school operations for the 2021-22 school year. Your input is central to meeting the needs of students and elevating questions and challenges related to school operations. The Discussion Draft will guide our conversation during your scheduled engagement session. Your input will be collected through a survey during your engagement session in each of four focused areas:

  1. Planning;
  2. Instruction;
  3. Health & Safety Protocols; and
  4. Enrollment and Attendance.

In addition, our team will take notes during each discussion.

The information captured in this Discussion Draft is not intended to be comprehensive or final guidance for Oregon’s K-12 public schools and districts.

We welcome you to prepare by reviewing this document ahead of your scheduled engagement session. We recognize that reviewing the slides out of context of the meeting may leave you with questions. Please bring those questions or concerns to our engagement session so we can explore them together.

As we have learned through the past year, planning ahead always comes with the caveat of future change to attend to current COVID-19 conditions and updated mitigation information. We look forward to engaging with you and refining these ideas in the coming days. Thank you for all that you continue to do for Oregon’s students and families.

Thank you,

Colt Gill Oregon Department of Education Director
