SIA Update

While the financial forecast remains uncertain, the Student Investment Account’s focus remains unwavering in deepening equity and engaging communities in district plans. In the spirit of continuous improvement, we wanted to highlight some of the ways that districts have integrated equity and community engagement into their initial SIA plans.

To guide resource allocation and evaluation of mental health strategic investments, one applicant used the following equity lens questions:

  1. Who are the racial/ethnic and underserved groups affected? What is the potential impact of the resource allocation and strategic investment to these groups?
  2. Does the decision being made ignore or worsen existing disparities or produce other unintended consequences?
  3. What are the barriers to more equitable outcomes?
  4. How have we intentionally involved stakeholders of key focal populations?
  5. How can we modify or enhance our strategies to ensure each learner and communities’ individual and cultural needs are met?
  6. How are we collecting data on race, ethnicity, and native language?
  7. What is our commitment to P-20 professional learning for equity? What resources are we allocating for training in culturally responsive instruction?

Another district completed a comprehensive analysis of data that revealed persistent gaps and inequities for focal student groups. To deepen their understanding, they created a literature review to examine the best practices across the state for addressing their specific gaps and engaged 24 community groups representing historically underserved groups in their district. Based on what they learned, the district plans to use SIA funds to improve instruction for their English Language Learners, enhance their NATIVES Program, and increase opportunities for their focal student groups to participate in afterschool and summer programming.
