Basic Police Class #397: The 38 police recruits enrolled in BP397 have successfully completed 3 ½ weeks of their remaining Basic Police training. (14 ½ of 16 weeks of the BP course overall). The delivery of this training (with the implementation of additional safety protocols being adjusted as needed) continues to run smoothly.

Tentative Training Schedule through August 24th: This report looks very much like what was reported during last week’s update with adjustments made to the start dates of the two scheduled EMD classes.

    • OLM014B – Return 8/24
    • IPSLEI 15-3 – Return 6/15
    • IPSLEI 15-4 – Return 7/13

NOTE: This tentative schedule eliminates the training “down week” that was previously scheduled for the week of 6/29.

There is still much work to be done to ensure that we can bring back this many students safely while continuing to maintain the integrity of the training being delivered. Because of this, ALL OF THESE DATES REMAIN SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY TIME AND FOR ANY REASON.

Our Class/Venue Coordinators and Administrative staff are working hard to finalize class schedules while making the necessary logistical arrangements and adjustments.

We will continue do our best to ensure the communication of our planning remains transparent and up-to-date. The success of the return/start of these classes will inform the finalization of the remainder of the 2020 training schedule.

Training Delivery during the COVID-19 Pandemic: We are restarting our training operations fully aware that we cannot completely eliminate the risks of contracting or spreading COVID-19 any more than we can completely eliminate the risks of students or staff contracting any other illness or experiencing a physical injury while engaged in public safety training.

While we can’t eliminate risks we will do our best to mitigate risks through safe practices, social distancing, PPE, etc. when possible. Still our Basic and Leadership students and DPSST staff are being directly and purposefully asked to assume basic responsibility of their own personal health and safety. Any student, student employer or staff member unwilling to risk exposure to COVID, or any other illness or injury at any time while on the OPSA campus is expected to immediately report their concerns and cease engagement in training activities.

Scheduling of DPSST Venues: As reported last week, the finalization of the mandated course schedule will allow DPSST to begin evaluating requests from Oregon Public Safety Academy (OPSA) tenant agencies and other public safety partners who wish to use DPSST training venues. A procedure for requesting venue use, as well as an internal process for reviewing each request is being developed and will be shared when available.

Maintenance Training Reports: Maintenance training reports are being sent to agencies as usual. These reports are being provided for information only. DPSST will not suspend any public safety certification for a failure to obtain or report hours due to the COVID-19 pandemic in accordance with the Temporary Administrative Rule adopted on March 31st.

The Temporary Rule language is available here: https://www.oregon.gov/dpsst/docs/COVIDTempRule.pdf
