DESCRIPTION:
THE OREGON DEPARTMENT of PUBLIC SAFETY STANDARDS and TRAINING

is recruiting for a Public Safety Training Specialist 2
(Class Coordinator)
in the Training Division

• This is one, regular, full-time position located in Salem, Oregon (at 4190 Aumsville Hwy SE).
• This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies.
• This position is represented by Oregon Public Safety Association.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The purpose of this position is to administer primarily DPSST police training courses.

Class Management
Oversees primarily basic classes and students through observation, counseling, maintaining discipline, provides identification and intervention of student misconduct. Acts as a positive role model and motivates class members to form a positive, cohesive team. Conducts preliminary student investigations of misconduct and recommends a course of action. Communicates with employing agency heads on student progress and issues that arise during the training course. Identifies, tracks, and coordinates remediation in student deficiencies. Reviews and approves written examinations prior to examinations being administered. Remains current on progress of students in survival skills areas. Provides oversight of instructors who teach, including introductions prior to training, liaison with the Curriculum Unit, and mentoring based on student feedback and personal observations. Coordinates documentation of class-related issues and submits for entry into the class file. Coordinates and conducts graduation ceremonies and class projects.

Administer training courses
Facilitates workgroups and actively participates in the research, development, and implementation of training. Identifies and mentors instructors in these courses and provides annual instructor updates.

Instruction
Provides subject matter expert instruction students and demonstrates technical proficiency. Demonstrates competence as a presenter in the areas of scenario-based training, fielding questions from students, and effective use of training equipment. Maintains classroom discipline and documents observed conduct or deficiencies. Supports the DPSST theme-enhanced training through application.

Interactive Skills
Exercises a high level of communication skills to deliver effective presentations, and to effectively interact with inter- and intra- agency personnel. Provides oral and written reports; drafts recommendations on training issues, and acts as a liaison with students and constituents. Uses effective and positive problem-solving skills when communicating with students, staff, and constituents. Fosters trust and promotes team building while supporting the Agency mission.

Professional Networking
Maintains membership and involvement in professional organization and/or activities as an agency representative in order to support, promote, and/or facilitate the agency mission.

QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED & REQUESTED SKILLS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Six years of professional level experience related to the instructional assignment and based on ORS 181.610 through 181.690. Typically this experience is in the area of public safety (law enforcement officers, adult and youth corrections officers, parole and probation officers, fire service professionals, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers). Experience must have included delivering structured training sessions or on-the-job training.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

You must be able to obtain a Dept. of Public Safety Standards and Training Instructor Certification within 90 days of the hire date and maintain your certification throughout your employment with the Department.

WORKING CONDITIONS


a. Intra and interstate travel 15-25% of the time in all types of weather.
b. Presentation of programs in all types of weather.
c. Working extended hours as needed.
d. Occasional exertion and lifting of equipment.
e. Participation in firearms, defensive tactics, and emergency vehicle operation.
Exposure to extreme noises, temperature, reduced lighting, poor air quality, biting insects, and noxious weeds.
