Salem company awarded bid on
I-5 Kuebler Interchange Project
SALEM – K & E Excavating of Salem was awarded the bid to build the I-5 Kuebler Interchange Project that will relieve congestion, improve safety and support economic development opportunities in the South Salem area. The company was the low bidder of $9.6 million to build the project.
Construction is expected to start sometime in May with construction continuing until October 2016. The I-5 Kuebler Interchange Project will address the increasing congestion at the interchange by modifying the existing southbound off ramp, which will decrease the conflicts at Kuebler that have caused back-ups on I-5 southbound. The new ramp will meet modern standards and contain excess capacity. The project will also add a westbound to southbound I-5 loop on ramp and modify the eastbound to southbound I-5 on ramp.
While the project staging and traffic control has not been finalized, travelers can expect periodic single lane closures of both northbound and southbound I-5; some nights, two-lane closures of I-5 will be required; in addition, there will be a weekend full closure of the southbound off ramp, and a one week closure of the southbound on ramp; and single lane closures of Kuebler Blvd. are also anticipated.
Most of the funding for the project comes from the Jobs and Transportation Act (JTA), approved by the Oregon Legislature in 2009.
