Drivers should prepare for rain, slick roads

MEDFORD – The first significant rain since earlier this summer will mean southwest Oregon roads and highways will be slick due to accumulated oil and road grime.

“Wet pavement means slick pavement,” said ODOT District Manager Jerry Marmon, whose area covers Jackson and Josephine Counties.

 

“Motorists need to adjust their driving habits to the weather forecast or else they’ll find themselves in the ditch or up against the guardrail.”

 

If you are driving in areas experiencing heavy rain or windy conditions, adjust your driving to fit conditions and remember these driving tips:

  • Turn off your cruise control.
  • If you lose traction and your vehicle feels like it’s floating, gradually slow down. Don’t slam on the brakes.
  • Be on the alert for downed trees, especially around a blind corner. 

 

ODOT also encourages motorists to prepare their vehicles in advance – and encourages everyone, including pedestrians and bicyclists, to plan for extra traveling time. Adjusting speed or changing a route based on the weather, and then being extra cautious, all play up the importance of being prepared when weather patterns are changing.

 

For example, take these steps to make sure your vehicle is ready for the changing season:

  • Keep wipers clean and in good condition; fill the windshield washer tank.
  • Ensure the heater and defroster is working properly.
  • Test all lights. Carry spare light bulbs.
  • Use antifreeze that’s good to -25°F; check and fill washer and other fluids and make sure hoses aren’t loose or brittle.
  • Make certain your battery is fully charged (also check battery age and cable conditions).
  • Ensure your tires are in good condition and properly inflated for best traction, including your spare.
  • Keep an automotive safety kit in your vehicle.
