For Immediate Release
The following report is for the week of Feb. 7-14, 2014, and includes ODOT highways in Josephine, Jackson, Coos, Curry and Douglas counties. Projects are listed in the following order: highway, location, project name. Project construction costs are added in parenthesis as appropriate.
COOS COUNTY
OREGON 42 (Coos Bay-Roseburg Highway), MP 44 to MP 45.5, County Line Curves tree clearing
The Oregon 42 County Line Curves project will improve safety through this corridor by straightening the road in some areas and improving sight distances for drivers. The first stage of work will involve removing trees on the westbound side of the highway so that excavation work can begin this spring.
During February and March, motorists should expect intermittent lane closures and delays between milepost 44 and 46 due to tree removal work. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 233.4 to 234.5, McCullough Bridge rehabilitation (north section) ($23 million)
This five-year project will help prevent corrosion on McCullough Bridge by applying a cathodic protection treatment to the northern concrete arches of the structure.
Watch for nighttime (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) lane closures across the bridge. Flaggers and pilot cars will provide traffic control as needed.
The sidewalk on both sides of the bridge has been reduced to three feet in width during construction.
NOTE: Due to construction activity and safety concerns, the access road at the northeast corner of the bridge is restricted. Only ODOT employees and contractors are permitted in this area. Please do not drive or park on the access road.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 234-238, North Bend to Coos Bay paving, sidewalks and traffic signals ($6.5 million)
Construction is mostly complete. Watch for intermittent lane, shoulder and sidewalk closures throughout the project area.
CURRY COUNTY
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 339-340, Pistol River Bridge rehabilitation
Watch for intermittent lane closures on U.S. 101 at Pistol River. Watch for flaggers and construction signage.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 330-331, Hunter Creek Bridge cathodic protection (3 million)
Watch for workers and equipment on the shoulder. Expect single lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers.
DOUGLAS COUNTY
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 205-207, hazard tree removal
From January to mid-April, U.S. 101 motorists should expect lane closures and delays up to 20 minutes between milepost 205 and 207 due to hazard tree removal.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 210.3 and MP 213.6, rockfall hazard mitigation ($600,000)
At milepost 213.6, south of Reedsport, motorists should watch for workers and equipment on the shoulder. Watch for intermittent lane closures and brief delays. Flaggers will provide traffic control as necessary.
At milepost 210.3, north of the Umpqua River, motorists should watch for intermittent shoulder closures.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 211, Umpqua River & McIntosh Slough Bridge ($4 million)
This two-year project will paint and make repairs to the bridge over the Umpqua River and McIntosh Slough at the north end of Reedsport.
Watch for intermittent lane closures and brief delays as construction begins the week of Feb. 17-21. Flaggers will provide traffic control as necessary.
OREGON 38 (Umpqua Highway), MP 39, Elk Creek Tunnel rehabilitation ($1.4 million)
This three-month project will install a liner on the walls and ceiling of the Elk Creek Tunnel, and make repairs to the road surface.
Starting Saturday evening, Feb. 15, the tunnel will be closed five nights a week for three months.
Weekly schedule: The nighttime tunnel closures will be scheduled from Saturday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Detour: When the tunnel is closed, eastbound Oregon 38 traffic will detour from Elkton to Sutherlin on Oregon Highway 138W, then north on Interstate 5 toward Drain or Cottage Grove. Westbound traffic will follow the same route in the opposite direction.
Emergency service vehicles: During the nighttime closures, workers will only open the tunnel for emergency service vehicles. All other traffic must use alternate routes.
During daytime hours, motorists should watch for intermittent single-lane closures and brief delays. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 129, Umpqua River Bridge maintenance
Southbound I-5 motorists should watch for nighttime (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.) lane closures at milepost 129 the week of Feb. 10-14 due to repair and maintenance work on the bridge over the North Umpqua River.
JOSEPHINE COUNTY
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 67-82, Glendale to Hugo paving and northbound Sexton climbing lane ($28 million)
This project will repave more than 14 miles of Interstate 5 between Hugo and Glendale, construct a 2.8-mile climbing lane on the northbound approach to Sexton Pass, and make other safety improvements. During the winter months, most work will take place off road as crews focus on curbs, drainage and permanent signs.
On I-5, watch for intermittent ramp closures, lane and shoulder closures throughout the project area. Watch for reduced speed limits. Watch for construction signs, electronic message boards, and roadside workers and equipment.
On Old Highway 99, watch for construction work and flaggers.
