First major contract awarded on
Newberg-Dundee Bypass (Phase 1) Project
Open houses scheduled to kick off construction
NEWBERG—LaDuke Construction of Talent, Oregon has been awarded the first major contract for construction of the first phase of the Newberg-Dundee Bypass, a controlled-access expressway that will significantly reduce traffic congestion on OR99W and improve livability and traffic flow in the surrounding communities. Construction begins this summer.
The $8 million contract will be one of four major contracts awarded over the next three years for construction of the $262 million road that will extend four miles from OR 219/Wilsonville Road to OR 99W south of Dundee, with one travel lane in each direction. It will be open in 2016.
With the start of construction getting closer, ODOT is hosting two “drop-in” style project open houses to share the latest designs and aesthetic elements, and answer questions about the first year of construction:
· Tuesday, June 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dundee Community Center, 1026 OR 99W in Dundee, and
· Wednesday, June 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chehalem Youth Center, 620 N. Morton St. in Newberg.
“This is exciting news for the citizens of Newberg, Dundee and Yamhill County to finally see the beginning of construction on this important highway,” said Newberg Mayor Bob Andrews. “We can look forward to reduced congestion, improved safety, increased jobs and improved community livability.”
LaDuke’s work includes constructing major embankments for bridge approaches in the section of the Bypass from the connection south of Dundee to OR 219. Activities this summer include the hauling of rock, sand, and dirt in and out of the area as the contractor prepares the area for road building that will be contracted separately next year.
In order to expedite the schedule, ODOT is issuing four separate contracts for building Phase 1 of the project. By doing so, initial preparatory work can begin this summer while the bridge and road designs are being finalized. Also, this approach should allow smaller companies to bid for the work.
Although funding is not available for the full 11 miles of the new four-lane bypass, both the Cities of Newberg and Dundee will benefit from Phase 1 through reduced congestion and freight traffic in their downtown areas and increased safety. Additionally, hundreds of living-wage construction jobs will be created.
