Overnight Extension of I-5 Southbound Closure Sept. 21-23
PORTLAND – On the nights of Sept. 21, 22, and 23, the ramp from I-84 westbound to I-5 southbound will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., extending the existing I-5 southbound closure to the junction at I-405 on the Marquam Bridge. ODOT maintenance crews will complete required 2-year maintenance inspections on the Marquam Bridge. Completing this work now during the I-5 southbound closure for the I-5 Rose Quarter Project reduces cost, shares resources, and avoids additional separate closures.
- All overnight westbound traffic from I-84 will be directed to I-5 northbound. Detour routes will be clearly signed.
- The ramp from I-84 westbound to I-5 southbound will remain open during daytime hours.
On the nights of Sept. 21, 22, and 23, the ramp from I-84 westbound to I-5 southbound will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., extending the existing I-5 southbound closure about 1.25 miles to the junction at I-405 on the Marquam Bridge.
Other active closures include:
- On the nights of Sept. 24, 25, and 26, similar work will be completed in single lane closures on the connecting ramps between I-405 and I-5 near the south waterfront between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. These closures may have slight impacts to I-5 southbound closure detour routes. For more information on these lane closures, visit TripCheck.com.
- I-5 southbound will remain closed 24 hours a day between the Broadway exit and I-84 ramp to I-5 southbound.
About the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project:
We are improving safety and congestion where I-5, I-84, and I-405 converge and reconnecting the Albina neighborhood by constructing a highway cover over a portion of I-5.
From summer 2025 through late 2026, we are constructing new stormwater facilities, repairing the concrete deck in a section of I-5, completing a seismic retrofit, beginning work to extend an existing merging lane on I-5 southbound, and constructing a new sign structure. Visit the project website for more information.
