ODOT will clear small trees and brush along U.S. 101 south of Chetco River Bridge

HARBOR – ODOT plans to remove small trees and brush along the west side of U.S. 101 south of the Chetco River Bridge the week of Sept. 14-18.
This work will require southbound lane and shoulder closures during daylight hours. Drivers should expect congestion and delays at peak travel times.
The southbound sidewalk will also be closed when work is taking place. Pedestrians are advised to use the sidewalk on the northbound side of the highway.
This area was last cleared in February 2021. Vegetation has grown back and is now encroaching on the southbound sidewalk, providing less space for pedestrians.
Why is ODOT doing this?
ODOT frequently removes brush and trees near the roadway for safety reasons. Vegetation near the roadway is vulnerable to fires and trees often fall into highway travel lanes during winter storms.
Trees along the roadside can make it more difficult for drivers and pedestrians to see one another. Removing trees can improve visibility and allow more sunlight onto the road and sidewalks.
The brush and trees in this area also contribute to drainage problems. Foliage from trees frequently blocks local catch basins, which can result in flooding.
