Expect lane closures, minor delays beginning week of Sept. 14 in La Grande

Sept. 11, 2026

LA GRANDE – Travelers in La Grande can expect lane and shoulder closures and minor delays beginning next week as crews begin curb ramp upgrades along U.S. 30 (Adams Avenue) and OR 82 (Island Avenue).

Crews will begin at the intersection of U.S. 30 (Adams Avenue) and Walnut Street and move toward downtown.

Plan for changing traffic patterns and brief delays.

Construction schedules may change due to weather or other unexpected conditions.

Project locations

Multiple crews will be working simultaneously throughout the project area. We do not know when or where work at other locations will begin. We will post updates to the project webpage when we have more details.

  • Baker County: Baker City, Haines and Sumpter.
  • Union County: Elgin, La Grande and Union.
  • Wallowa County: Enterprise and Wallowa.

We have already updated curb ramps in these communities. Why are we returning?

We recently reviewed all curb ramps in eastern Oregon to make sure we didn't miss any locations. Some sites were not included in earlier projects because of issues like permitting or utility conflicts. In addition, a few ramps that were previously upgraded now need repairs. This means we'll be returning to some communities we've already visited.

The work in Baker, Union and Wallowa counties is part of our continuing effort to upgrade curb ramps throughout eastern Oregon. Work in these communities is scheduled to be completed by October 2027.

During construction, you can expect:

  • Crews working during the day, Monday through Thursday.
  • Lane shifts and occasional lane or shoulder closures.
  • Signs and flaggers directing traffic.
  • Some delays and construction noise.
  • Business access will remain open during construction.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained through or around work zones.

Watch for crews, equipment and changing traffic patterns in work zones. Slow down and use caution.

Why are curb ramps important?

ADA curb ramps make it easier for people to move between the sidewalk and road. This can be helpful for those who have trouble stepping up and down high curbs.

It's also helpful for people using wheelchairs, strollers, walkers, hand carts and bicycles. These ramps make it easier for everyone to get around.
