SALEM -- Across Oregon, kids are headed back to school, and this means traffic around neighborhoods, school zones, and transit routes can increase significantly. The Oregon Department of Transportation urges everyone to stay alert, follow the speed limit, drop distractions and share the road. 

Everyone can do their part to make sure kids get to and from school safely. 

When driving: Slow down and stay alert 

• Slow down and stay alert in neighborhoods and school zones. Be on the lookout for people walking before, during and after school hours. 

• Respect school zone speed limits. Follow the posted school zone speed limit, usually 20 mph or lower. Pay close attention to signs marked "When Flashing," "School Days 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.," or "When Children Are Present".  

• Stop for school buses. When you see a school bus slowing down or stopping, watch not only the bus but the area around it, too. Kids are especially vulnerable when approaching or leaving a school bus. It is illegal to pass a school bus when red lights are flashing. 

• Focus on driving. Put the phone away and avoid other distractions while behind the wheel. 

• Watch for people at crossings. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and look carefully for people walking, biking or rolling before proceeding. 

Teach your children how to be visible and predictable when walking 

• Cross at corners or marked crosswalks where people driving are more likely to see you. Make your intention to cross clear and look left, right, and left again before stepping into the street.  

• Make eye contact to ensure people driving see you before stepping off the curb. Never assume a driver has seen you. 

• Use sidewalks whenever available. Where there isn’t a sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic and stay as far left on the road as safely possible.  

• Be visible. Wear or carry something bright or reflective, especially when it's dark or visibility is poor.  

Teach your children how to follow the rules of the road when biking, scooting, or skateboarding 

• Wear a helmet that fits properly. 

• Ride in the direction of traffic and follow all stop signs and traffic signals.  

• Use hand signals and lights so others can see you and anticipate what you're doing. Use appropriate lights and reflectors when riding in darkness or low-light conditions.
