CANYONVILLE – Staffing challenges at Oregon DMV are forcing the Canyonville office to reduce service from three days a week to one. Starting Tuesday, July 7, the office at 241 NE Main St. will only be open on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a midday closure from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
The Canyonville DMV will also no longer offer drive tests during the reduced schedule. Class C drive tests are offered by appointment at the Roseburg DMV and by third-party testers.
The Canyonville office has two employees who both left to continue serving the public in other roles, including one at a different DMV office. We will shift staff from offices in the central region to cover one day a week but do not have enough people to cover all three days.
“We can’t say how long the reduction of service days in Canyonville will last due to staffing and budget considerations,” said DMV Public Information Officer Chris Crabb. “It takes months to a year to get a new hire trained and proficient, so residents should plan on this reduced schedule for the foreseeable future.”
Oregon DMV is already severely understaffed. We’ve employed roughly the same number of people for the last 25 years, as determined by the legislature. In that same time, Oregon’s population has grown by over 800,000, nearly 25%. Even if all positions were filled, there are not enough employees to cover what is needed at DMV offices.
Consider checking to see if you can get your service done online at DMV2U, which offers over 30 common transactions 24 hours a day. You can also renew or replace your registration and stickers at a self-serve DMV Express Kiosk in some Fred Meyer stores around the state. These self-service options can save you a trip to a DMV office and free up appointment times for others.
