Striping project on I-84 in eastern Oregon is complete

June 16, 2026

Crews have completed striping work on three sections of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon. Over the past several weeks, they installed new striping in areas where weather and traffic wear down pavement markings. The new striping is designed to improve safety and visibility.

I-84 milepost 253, OR 244 overpass

This section of the Grande Ronde Canyon on I-84, milepost 253, received new, wider white lines through the curves. May 26, 2026.

Wider lines highlight curves, boost safety

As part of this project, travelers will also notice new, wider white lane lines in two familiar canyon areas: Grande Ronde Canyon west of La Grande and Burnt River Canyon west of Huntington.

These high-visibility markings are part of a safety effort designed to discourage lane changes in tight, winding areas and help drivers stay more alert as they enter challenging curves.

Travelers will see new 8-inch-wide solid white lines in locations where crashes occur more often. These same locations are already equipped with safety improvements such as signs, barriers and speed warnings. Because these sections continue to experience higher crash rates, wider striping is being added as another tool to help travelers navigate the curves more safely.

Research shows that increasing the visibility of pavement markings can help reduce crashes by making lane boundaries and the path of the road easier to see.

Similar wide striping is already used in Oregon at sites such as the I-5 Myrtle Creek curves, the U.S. 26 Vista Ridge Tunnel, the I-5 Medford Viaduct and the I-5 high occupancy vehicle lanes in Portland.

The new wider striping is permanent, and ODOT will monitor its effectiveness through crash data over time. Because statewide crash reporting can take up to two years, the full safety impact will take time to assess. Similar treatments have shown promise in other locations.

With the striping improvements now complete, travelers can expect clearer lane guidance and improved visibility throughout the project area.
