Expect short delays for U.S. 199 road work

Watch for flaggers and pilot cars during the day.

May 5, 2026

JOSEPHINE COUNTY – Work to maintain the highway shoulders and drainage systems on a 27-mile stretch of U.S. 199 (Redwood Highway) begins this week. Travelers can expect short delays in the work zone.

On the morning of Wednesday, May 6, crews start work near milepost 14, just south of Wonder. The work zone will move south on U.S. 199 toward the Oregon-California border as crews make progress. The project is scheduled for completion by early June, weather permitting.

Travelers can expect:

  • Daytime lane and shoulder closures, Monday through Thursday.
  • Traffic controlled by flaggers and pilot cars.
  • Delays of less than 20 minutes.

Please drive with caution through the work zone. Slow down and watch for workers and equipment in the roadway.

Crews will pause work between Wednesday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 27 to help reduce impacts for Memorial Day weekend travelers. Visit TripCheck.com for the latest information on road conditions and closures.

Note: A highway widening project on U.S. 199 in California may also affect travel between the Rogue Valley and the coast. For the latest information, visit Caltrans Quickmap or the project website: Caltrans - 197/199 Safe STAA Access Highway Improvement Project.
