Paving work begins next week on Oregon 42 in Winston, Green District

WINSTON – Contractors will begin paving the final two segments of Oregon 42 through Winston and the Green District next week.
Last fall, a one-mile section of Oregon 42 was paved in the middle of the project area, between Rolling Hills Road and Carnes Road. This area needed to be paved before the new traffic signal at Rolling Hills Road could be turned on and nearby safety features installed.
Over the next 6-8 weeks, prime contractor Rocky Mountain Construction will pave the highway from Lookingglass Creek to Rolling Hills Road and from Carnes Road to Interstate 5.
Most paving work is scheduled at night, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday evening to Friday morning. Paving is weather-dependent and could be postponed due to rain.
At least one lane in each direction of Oregon 42 will remain open at all times.
Paving approaches
The first task is to pave approaches, which are the final 20-30 feet of a side road before it meets the highway. Only one side road will be closed at any given time, and most closures will be less than 2-3 hours. Local drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes.
For the week of April 26-May 1, the contractor will start at Brosi Orchard Road and pave each approach heading south along Oregon 42 toward the Cheetah intersection and west to Lookingglass Creek.
The approach at Lookingglass Road is tentatively scheduled for the nights of April 29 or April 30.
Detours in Green
The following week, May 3-8, workers are scheduled to pave the approaches at the east end of the project area. This area includes the Green District intersections at Carnes Road (Kelly’s Corner) and Grant Smith Road.
Both intersections are larger than others in the project area and the approaches are more heavily damaged. A full night will be needed to pave each approach.
ODOT will provide signed detours when paving these approaches:

Carnes Road (Sunday night, May 3): When the south end of Carnes Road is closed at the highway for paving, local drivers can detour along Happy Valley Road and Old Hwy 99 to connect with Oregon 42.

Roberts Creek Road (Monday night, May 4): When the north end of Roberts Creek Road is closed at the highway, local drivers can detour through Brittney Avenue and Grange Road to connect with Oregon 42.

Grant Smith Road (Tuesday night, May 5): When the west end of Grant Smith Road is closed at the highway, drivers can take Ingram Drive, Speedway Road and Old Hwy 99 to reach Oregon 42.

Old Hwy 99 (Wednesday and Thursday nights, May 6 and 7): When Old Hwy 99 is closed at the Oregon 42/Grant Smith Road intersection, local drivers can use Happy Valley Road and Carnes Road to reach Oregon 42.
Ramp closure
The northbound I-5 off-ramp at Exit 119, which connects with Oregon 42, will be closed one night for pavement repairs. This closure is tentatively scheduled for May 4 or May 5.
When the ramp is closed, trucks and other vehicles can continue north on I-5 to Exit 124 (Harvard), turn around and reach Exit 119 from the southbound direction.
Highway lanes
Paving work on the Oregon 42 travel lanes is likely to begin the week of May 10 and continue for about 4-6 weeks. ODOT will provide updates on the paving schedule as work continues.
Drivers should watch for construction signs and roadside message boards.
All work on the $11.97 million project is scheduled to be completed by September.
